Science Symposium: Sources, Transport, and Fate of Nutrients in the
Mississippi and Atchafalaya River Basins
Dates: November 7-9, 2006
Location: Millennium Hotel Minneapolis, 1313 Nicollet Mall,
Minneapolis, MN 55403, (www.millenniumhotels.com)
This symposium is the fourth in a series of symposiums sponsored by the
Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force
(www.epa.gov/msbasin/actionplan.html). The symposia are part of the
reassessment of the Action Plan for Reducing, Controlling, and
Mitigating Hypoxia in the Northern Gulf of Mexico (Action Plan).
Short-term action item #11 from the Action Plan (p. 14) states that "By
December 2005, and every five years thereafter, the Task Force will
assess the nutrient load reductions achieved and the response of the
hypoxic zone, water quality throughout the Basin, and economic and
social effects. Based on this assessment, the Task Force will determine
appropriate actions to continue to implement this strategy, or, if
necessary, revise the strategy."
This symposium will focus on recent scientific findings about the
sources, transport, and fate of nutrients in the Mississippi and
Atchafalaya River Basins. Key topics will be addressed at various scales
from small watersheds to large rivers, including the effects of these
processes on nutrient delivery to the Gulf of Mexico.
This symposium is sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; the
U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service; the U.S.
Department of Interior, U.S. Geological Survey; and the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Water.
