Job Summary:
The Institute for Community Research has an immediate opening for an
Ethnographer/Research Associate to participate in a three year NIDA
funded study of youth party and social activity situations, drug use
including Ecstasy and intimate relationships and practices. The study
includes field ethnography, focus groups with youth on youth lifestyle,
the use of MDMA and other drugs, and sexual beliefs and practices, and
in-depth interviews with MDMA using polydrug users in the Hartford area.
Recording, coding and group analysis and write up are critical to the
position. The candidate will join an ethnographic research team under
the overall guidance of Jean J. Schensul, Principal Investigator. The
position is subject to available federal funds. ICR offers a culturally
and intellectually diverse, community based collaborative research
environment with options and support for career advancement.

Specific Responsibilities:

1. Conduct field ethnography in sites and situations where Greater
Harford youth party, socialize and get together, and record observations
on a regular basis.

2. Identify participants and facilitate focus group interviews across
ethnic and gender groupings perceptions of youth lifestyle, beliefs
about MDMA use, polydrug use, and reasons for drug use and sexuality.

3. Conduct in-depth interviews with youth who use substances in social
settings in the greater Hartford area on these topics.

4. Transcribe and code data collected in the field.

5. Participate on a weekly basis in coding review and analysis sessions
with PI, project coordinator and other members of the research team.

6. Contribute to and take leadership in publishing papers and doing
presentations on the topic of party drugs and sexual risk.

7. Contribute to the development and writing of grants that focus on
substance use prevention among youth and young adults.

Required Qualifications:
Completed M.A., Ph.D. or equivalent experience in a social science
field, and several years of successful experience in the conduct of
ethnography in field settings including observations and interviewing
with key informants and youth and young adults of diverse ethnic
backgrounds.
Experience in Hartford area (or similar urban/suburban) field research,
outreach and in-depth interviews with urban/suburban youth and young
adults.
Experience coding, analyzing and writing up qualitative/ethnographic
data.
Excellent writing ability.
Demonstrated experience working with a multi-ethnic population of youth
and young adults.
Knowledge of the fields of gender substance use and sexual risk
desirable.

Essential Job Functions:
1. Ability to recruit appropriate study participants.
2. Ability to conduct and record topic specific in-depth and key
informant interviews.
3. Ability to conduct and record study observations in social settings
where party drugs may be used.
4. Ability to code, analyze and write up ethnographic interview and
observational data in a timely way using Atlas Ti or comparable
software.
5. Ability to conceptualize study tasks and presentations and develop
papers for publication and dissemination approaches.
6. Ability to relate to the multiethnic study target population.
7. Experience in team research and grant writing.

Work Schedule Demands:
35 – 40 hour week minimum dedicated to field research, recording, coding
and analysis.
Availability for study team meetings.
Ability to work some nights and weekends in observation and informal
interviewing in “party settings”.
Meet schedule of production for analysis and paper preparation and
additional grant writing activities.

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Start date: Early Fall, 2007
