                                  1ST JULY- DOCTOR’S DAY

Issued by Indian Medical Association, Dehra Dun

Since 1991 1st July every year is observed as the Doctor’s Day, to commemorate the anniversary of great physician, social worker and politician Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy.

Dr B C Roy was born on 1st July 1882 at Bankipur, Patna. He passed entrance examination from Patna Collegiate School in 1897 and later did his BA in 1901. he then went to Calcutta to pursue studies in Medicine from Calcutta Medical College in 1906 and passed MD in 1908. He then went to United Kingdom and was admitted to St. Bartholomew’s Institution in London in 1909. He passed MRCP (London) and FRCS (England). On his return to India he joined Camicheal Medical College, Calcutta as Professor of Medicine. It was through his efforts that the Camicheal

Medical College developed and was subsequently named the R G Kar Medical College. He held this position till 1946.

In 1916 he was elected Fellow of the Calcutta University, a distinction that he retained till death. He became member of the Bihar Legislative council in 1923. He was actively involved in the formation of Indian Medical Association in 1926 and became its President for 1929-30 and again for 1937-38. Apart from being President of IMA for two terms he served the organization in various capacities as working Committee Member and Central Council Member. He was elected to all India Congress Committee (AICC) in 1928.

In 1931 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, London.

He was arrested during civil disobedience movement. He was chosen President of the Pradesh Congress Committee in 1934 but later resigned on issues against his principles. He concentrated on his profession and served the ailing humanity in a way, which is a guiding force for many young doctors.

Dr B C Roy made sincere efforts towards the establishment of Medical council of India (MCI) and became its first non-official President in 1939, and held that position till 1945. He played a very active role in enactment of Medical Council Bill which got passed in 1956.

In 1941 he was elected Fellow of American Society of chest Physicians and President of Medical Education Society. He was appointed Vice Chancellor of the Calcutta University from 1942-44. He also had the honor of being Mayor of Calcutta. After Independence, he became Governor of Uttar Pradesh. Once again he entered active politics and was elected Chief Minister of West Bengal in 1948. He adorned that post till his death in 1962. The state flourished under his dynamic stewardship in all spheres, including agriculture and industry.

He played a key role in the establishment of Mental Health and Hygiene Institute at Calcutta, Infectious Diseases Hospital and first Post Graduate Medical College in India in the existing SKM Medical College, Calcutta.

He gifted his house on Wellington Street, Calcutta to the people of West Bengal on his 80th birthday. He was looked upon as the “Architect of modern West Bengal”.

He was honored with Bharat Ratan Award in 1962.

Dr B C Roy belongs to the rare genre of illustrious men who served not only the medical profession but also the society at large and the country at various levels.

He left for his heavenly abode on the 1st July 1962, a rare coincidence, to be born and die on the same date i.e. 1st July.
