Battalion commander dismissed over soldiers protest

Batallion commander Lt. Col. Lambok Sihotang has been
dismissed from his position following a protest from soldiers
over what they said had been left the theft of their money,
Antara state news wire has reported.

Army chief of staff Gen.Agustadi Sasongko said that the decision
had come up after a meeting with Yonif 571 members in Jayapura
on Thursday.

Yesterday, soldiers from Battalion 751 in Sentani had staged a
violent protest during a ceremony commemorating West Papua's
integration into Indonesia. They had demanded the battalion
commander be held responsible for his actions, and questioned
why he had needed them to provide funds for the burial of their
fellow soldier, Private Joko, in his hometown in Nabire, Papua.

The soldiers said the army should have paid these costs. (ewd)
