Front Page
This week's articles are on healthy skepticism of recruiter advice (even when they think they're being profound)(http://www.thejobfairy.com/index.htm) and making fun of Republicans who f*** their co-workers in the literal sense instead of the political one. I usually archive old articles to the weblog, but I haven't decided if I will add that one. It's not terribly relevant outside of Colorado... Last week's article was about how to know when your company is about to kick the bucket (http://www.thejobfairy.com/2002_11_03_archive.html#83986516). Prior to that was a happy little piece on recession rage (http://www.thejobfairy.com/2002_10_13_archive.html#82945846). There was also an article about your skills as a project manager, which may be added to the Learning and Skills section some time in the future. It's kind of IT, but not the kind of hard technical skill we generally push.

Le Scam Du Jour (http://www.thejobfairy.com/2002_03_03_archive.html#10375612) and other pithy advice (http://www.thejobfairy.com/2002_03_24_archive.html#11126223) and (http://www.thejobfairy.com/2002_03_24_archive.html#11125719).

Hot Skill of the Month
November's skill is databases (http://www.jobfairy.com/hot_skill_of_the_month.htm). This is a serious cash cow in terms of paying for skills that pay off for you. Database people are revered and respected. If the database goes down, all hell breaks loose until one of these deities deigns to wave their magic wand and make everything OK again. Oracle is good, but any database will do... Sybase, even MS SQL Server and Access. I advise people to learn on the LAMP platform - Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP. All of which are open source (i.e. no cost to the user). Try MySQL today - you'll be glad you did. And learn SQL and PL/SQL querying. DBAs (database administrators) and developers are rarely out of work for long, even in this economy.

The Art of War
This is a new section - (http://www.jobfairy.com/sun_tzu_01.htm) - discussing the Art of War and how it applies to our modern circumstances. Modern examples are posted every week. Newest examples to date:
Seize the Opportunity To Lead a Sheep Away
How to derail a rival's promotion without their realizing it
Beat The Grass To Startle The Snake
Collecting intelligence about those you work with and for, without their knowing it
Borrow a Corpse to Raise the Spirit
Reuse of code saves you time and effort; you can also get your way through attrition
Lure the Tiger Down the Mountain
Your run at a job can be cut unpleasantly short without political backing

You Should Read This
November is kind of a "stuff a book in after the Thanksgiving feast" sort of month, so pick a book, any book, from the top titles at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?tag=jobfairyorg-20&path=subst/books/computers/computer-50.html) and digest it as you're waiting for the turkey bloat to subside.

Don't Say I Never Gave You Nothin'
I noticed a lot of people are downloading the template, but not the search log (http://www.jobfairy.com/images/jobfairy_search_log.zip). Trust me, you need the log, or you'll never know what password goes to where. It may seem like a pain in the seat cushion the first time around, but 6 months later, when that job isn't working out, and you realize you have to update 75 sites with your new skills... you'll thank me then.
