Ed- Thanks for the extensive info! I've been studying your suggestions
today, and have a couple of questions.
The reason I had the 12 mile day planned to get to Pine Lake (which I
realize is about 1/2 mile off the main trail), is that we are planning
to take a rest day the next day. I just want that day off to be in a
nice place. You suggest that we stop somewhere at the shore of E Pike
Lake. The guidebook does not show a camping area there so I didn't know
if there would be a potential location for a comfortable and private
(probably not an issue in May) 2-night stop. Do you think there would
be? (we wouldn't mind giving up the detour off the main trail at Pine!
Haha!)
You also suggest Sock Lake instead of Topper for camping. Doesn't
change the mileages by too much. Is Sock Lake a nicer place to camp, or
is it due to trail terrain/conditions that it would be better to have a
shorter day from Rose Cliffs to either Sock or Topper?
You can't imagine how much I appreciate all this good info! More info
will make the Arrowhead a less scary place for people to hike which
should bring more hikers which should make it easier to get help keeping
the trail maintained.
