Due to the upcoming North Country Trail Arrowhead Re-Route, you've been
hearing more and more about the Border Route Trail - on the plus side
BRT has some of the best scenics on the NCT while on the minus side some
of the sections within the BWCAW are really in need of maintenance.
Heres a chance for you to not only check out some of the incredible
scenics but to feel really good about yourself in the process. So what's
the catch?
All you have to do is join us on a three day maintenance trip to the
BWCAW Section of the Border Route Trail - Thursday evening, September
17th through Sunday evening, September 20th.
We'll be doing maintenance eastward from the Clearwater / Rove portage
on a section of trail with perhaps the greatest concentration of
overlooks on the entire BRT. Excellent scenics are guaranteed with fall
colors being a strong possibility. This section of the BRT runs along
the ridge separating Clearwater to the south from Rove, Watap, and
Mountain Lakes to the north. On one side, you'll have the magnificent
views of the bluffs along the south shore of Clearwater, while on the
north you'll see even more bluff faces plus be able to see off into Canada.
The group will car-pool up from the Twin Cities on Thursday evening,
9/17 with a food stop in Duluth. Friday night lodging will be at a USFS
ranger cabin. On Friday morning we'll canoe about a mile and a half down
Clearwater Lake to a campsite next to the Clearwater / Rove portage.
After setting up camp, we'll hike up the portage to the Border Route and
start a sweep to the east. On Saturday, we'll continue to the east and
on Sunday we'll canoe back to our cars for the drive home.
Once this section is cleared we'll have good to excellent trail covering
the 32 miles from Rose Lake through to the Superior Hiking Trail at the
Swamp River.
The trip cost of $55.00 is tax deductible and covers transportation and
meals (except for stops on the way up and back). If you live closer than
the Twin Cities and choose to meet us at the ranger cabin your trip
costs would be $25. Maximum trip size is 8. As of 9/2 we have room for
6. This trip is sponsored by the Border Route Trail Association in
cooperation with the Minnesota Rovers Outing Club.
