1. Welcome
************************************************

Hi

Well, Christmas and the New Year period is over with
for another year.

The children enjoyed getting their presents and then
Daniel & Jakob spent much of their time trying to play
with their big brother Ben's presents - there was lots
of arguing and fighting!

Only 348 days until Christmas!

Now, on with the show.

;-)

2. Test
************************************************

There are some mistakes in the following passage.
See if you can correct them. (The correct version is
at the end of the newsletter, but don't look at it
before you finish your version. No cheating!)

- - -

On Saturday the weather was wonderful so I did go
for a walk with two friend of me. We went to the park
and feed the ducks at the duckpond.

After that we went too a café and drinked a coffee.
I also eated a slyce of cake.

I leaved the café earlier than the others because I
have arranged to go on the cinema with my cousin.

We watch Spiderman and we enjoy it very many.

As the film ended we both went home.

3. Idiom
************************************************

#-# to sweep something under the carpet #-#

Imagine you're sweeping up some dust and dirt in
a room. If you are lazy, maybe you pick up one
corner of the carpet and sweep the dirt under it -
saving you some work, but only hiding the dirt for
now. It will probably be found sometime .

That's the origin of this idiom - if you sweep
something under the carpet you either avoid doing
it or you want to hide it from others.

However, it's possible (maybe even probable) that
what you sweep under the carpet will one day come
to light.

So, deal with the issue today - don't sweep it
under the carpet!

5. Jokes
************************************************

The soldiers had been in the field for two
weeks and hadn't had showers or been able
to change their clothes.

Then one day the General came along and said,
"Men, I have some good news and some bad news.
Which would you like first?"

All the men shouted, "Tell us the good news,
tell us the good news."

The general smiled and said, "Men, today we're
going to change our underwear."

All the men cheered.

"Now the bad news. Smith, you change with Jones.
Jackson, you change with Thomson ... "

A dog thinks:

"Hey, these people I live with feed me,
provide me with a nice warm house, stroke me,
and take good care of me ... they must be gods.

A cat thinks:

"Hey, these people I live with feed me,
provide me with a nice warm house, stroke me,
and take good care of me ... I must be a god.

Many hundreds of years ago a king went to
see a fortune teller to see what she could
predict about the future.

The fortune teller told the king that one of
his wives would die that year.

The king didn't believe her and went away
laughing.

Later that year one of the king's wives died.

He remembered what the fortune teller had told
him and thought that she had caused the death
of his wife (that she had made it happen).
He decided to put her to death.

He ordered that she be brought before him.

When she was before him he said to her, "You
predicted that my wife would die, and she did
die. So you are a fortune teller. Now, tell me
this - when will you die?"

The fortune teller realised that the king was
planning to kill her, so she thought very
carefully before answering, "I will die three
days before you do, your majesty."
