Help Wanted  Brian Shuford

Hi, my name is Brian Shuford. I’m a 32-year-old programmer from
Minnesota, USA. I am writing this as an open invitation to fellow
libertarians and free nation seekers. I have been researching the New
Nation movement on the Internet for a short time now, and one fact has
become abundantly clear, nothing is actually happening.

Please do not get me wrong. I am very impressed and heartened by what I
have found. There is a lively and intelligent debate raging, and much
has been done to address the theoretical and (shall I say) technical
basis for a libertarian state. The web is alive with constitutional
documents and legal structures that I find very attractive.

One thing is clear. There are many people diligently seeking freedom.

However, for someone who is actually ready to move, there don’t seem to
be any immediate destinations to suit.

I intend to change that. Let’s look at history; new territories are not
settled by planting fully functional cities in some wasteland, but
rather by pioneers eking a living as they see fit. Sure, times change
and eking technology is better now than it was when the USA claimed the
American west. It has to be, after all there are no American west’s
left. The number and quality of natural frontiers has become severely
limited. What has not changed? The essential ingredient is people who
are willing to leave the comfortable city of their birth in exchange for
the increased freedom of the frontier.

I believe that there are many such people in the world today. I am one
of them. I have read the frustrated posts of others.

I’m looking for people who are ready to do something about it. To be
more precise, I’m looking for people who are:

+ Serious
+ Libertarian (or analog such as objectivist)
+ Willing to leave their country of origin
+ Flexible about where they live
+ Have some financial means at their disposal
+ Have some skills, and the ability to learn and adapt
+ Wish to join a group of like-minded libertarians
+ Will be ready to leave in the spring of 2002

I am looking to mobilize next spring. That, in my mind, is the essential
difference between my approach and others I have found on the Internet.
They intend to build or buy a place and go there when it’s ready. I, on
the other hand, have picked a time (far enough in the future to allow
trip and provisioning planning), and will be satisfied to build what I
can when I get ‘there’. Freedom is more important than ease in my mind.
As my use of ‘there’ suggests, I am still open (at this time) to a
number of possible frontiers. I believe it’s the doing that is the
difference. Given that, destination becomes mostly a matter of taste. I
am looking for the experience and input of a group to determine this.

If you are personally interested please contact me at

If you know someone who may be interested in this adventure, please
forward this invitation to him or her.

Thank you for your attention,

Brian Shuford
