Nightline
TONIGHT'S FOCUS: Ted Koppel reports tonight, and every night this week, from Iraq. Tonight in a one-hour special, Ted Koppel retraces the steps he took at the start of the war when he was embedded with the Army's Third Infantry Division from the Kuwaiti border all the way to Baghdad. Last time it took nearly a month. Tonight, just a few hours. But along the way, its a very different country. The first in a special series: Report from Iraq: The Road to Baghdad.

Last spring, when the war in Iraq began, Ted Koppel and a team from Nightline, including executive producer Leroy Sievers, were embedded at the "Tip of the Spear," with the command center for the Army's Third Infantry Division. As they crossed the berm separating Kuwait and Iraq, Ted Koppel broadcast live as the Third I.D.'s 20,000 men and women and their heavy armor began the invasion of that country. They would spend the next four weeks with those soldiers, as the Army pushed through the towns of Nasariyah and Najaf, across the Euphrates River through Al Kifl, the Karbala Gap, and finally, on to seize Baghdad International Airport and witness the fall of Saddam Hussein. But as we all know the military's job did not end that day. The war goes on.

And so, this week Ted Koppel returns to Iraq once more, to see how the last eight months have changed Iraq and report on the ongoing conflict there.

Last time, Ted and the Nightline team entered the country accompanied by thousands of soldiers and heavy armor. This time, they make the trip in a small convoy of cars. And what did they find? A very different country. One observation: the liberation of Saddam Hussein's brutal regime has made room for widespread bribery and corruption. They also found the wreckage from Jessica Lynch's convoy, angry former Iraqi soldiers and grateful Iraqi citizens.
Ted Koppel and the Nightline team will report every night this week from Iraq. Tonight's one hour special, "The Road to Baghdad" will air in your regular Nightline timeslot. And looking ahead to tomorrow: Ted Koppel will be with the 82nd Airborne in Fallujah, one of the cities where the Iraqi resistance has been most fierce.

We hope you'll join us for tonight's one hour broadcast and every night this week for "Report from Iraq."
