RE: Upgrade info 9-1-2009  Howard Friedman

He could easily take an hour after/before work and do the upgrade. The way the economy is right now the little bit of extra "customer service" can go a long way.

He is just alienating himself from a customer. That is never good.

Vic,

On one level I agree, because he would be picking up a customer and if you
bought your Linn gear through the proper channels up to now then you would
be buying from him eventually.

On the other hand, the time he is spending on you (I don't know how far the
round-trip is to you to do the upgrade), and the time of the actual upgrade
involved both take away from him selling new gear and acquiring new
customers.

Personally I would upgrade your gear for free just to build up the "good
will" but his numbers might tell him differently.

Just trying to see both sides of this debate...

Steve

Hi Howard, That is probably the case. Unfortunate for me since I no
longer live near the original dealer. I am located in Westchester
County, NY.

What actually turned me off a bit is that I have purchase Linn gear from
the local Linn guy, just not the Unidisk, and I believe that $400 is a
bit much for the work involved.

Howard Friedman wrote:

But, if you bought it new from a Linn dealer then I would expect any
dealer not to charge. I have done numerous Unidisk updates and they
never take more that an hour.

To me that is no skin off my back to potentially gain a new customer.

Where are you located?

In my situation I did not purchase the Unidisk from the local Linn
dealer, therefore the charge to update.

Thanks Steve.

It has been a while since I upgraded my Unidisk. just checked and I
have

an L1...I borrowed the uni-prog when I did the Mech 3.04 from my
dealer

but he is out of state. I wonder if the new Mech/ESS/H8 will benefit
my

L1 board? Reason I am asking is that the local Linn dealer wanted
quite

a bit to do the upgrade. $400 if I remember correctly.

You're welcome Vic,

If you have an L3 or L4 board in your Unidisk then the serial
cable

 should
be the same (A Conn_439 cable)...

If you have a L1 or L2 board in your Unidisk, then a Uni=Prog
breakout

 unit
needs to be attached to the Conn_439 cable along with
disassembling of

 your
Unidisk. I think for a L1 or L2 version Unidisk a trip to the
dealer is

 definitely merited.

To figure out what level of board you have in your Unidisk, from
either

 hard
powered off or stand-by hold the eject button for 5 secs or so and
you

 will
get "User Settings" press the eject again and you will get "System

 Info",
the stop and pause buttons on the Unidisk will scroll through all
the

 info
points. Look for: PCAS297L..., whatever comes after the L is your
board

 level.

As for if it does change the sound...I think there is a sonic
difference

but
it might be more in my brain than in my ears...but then there are
people

who
say cables don't make a difference. Maybe we're hearing less
jitter or

 error
correction. As long as it makes the Unidisk perform better guess
it

 really
doesn't matter all that much as long as it doesn't degrade the
sound.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Great info! Thank you.

I have the serial cable for the H8 but not the Mech cable. Seems
the

mech update is important. I will have to ask my Linn dealer for a
quote

 on getting this update.

Info's received from Linn:

The only difference in the Mech code is a bug fix where some CDs
and SACDs would skip over the first few seconds of a disc when
it

The software version numbers work like this: The first 3 numbers
are the software pack, so for the Unidisk 1.1 H8 software this
is 115;

version number, so your version is 210. We are currently at

so the current software will read back S1150223 on the front
panel. The

There was a new release of Unidisk software on 9th January. The
new versions are:

H8:     v223
ESS:    v231
Mech:   v420
