< The electoral college
should disappear.>

So should the gerrymandering aka redistricting twice in ten years. The
Constitution calls for once. Done in Texas, approved by the courts. Now on
to Ohio and Colorado to do the same. Eighty percent of US population lives
on the two coasts and nearby counties. A cow in Iowa counts more
politically than a person in the Midwest. The whole system was based on a
predominantly agricultural country.

Re NYTimes opinion, there are a number of ordinary people in the Congress
who theoretically could run for president that are definitely not to the
manor born. And what about Bill Clinton?

Cheers,
Veronica

There's a University somewhere in the US that's very good at forecasting
the
results of a Presidential Election on one basis alone: the nearness of a
candidate to our Royal Family. >

ck: Bad news for the Dems, then. Kerry's background is Jewish. The name
sounds Irish but his grandfather changed it back in Austria, before
emigrating to the US. Seems this was a deep, dark family secret that
recently came to Kerry's attention. Interesting that it's not been brought
up at all. Interesting, too, about Kerry's grandfather's suicide in the
'29
stock market crash. (Presumably, this, too, was kept from the senator.)
Wonder what the Skull & Bones crowd think of that.

John Edwards is undoubtedly a far more talented politician
than Kerry and I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that he was also
generally more intelligent. But his c.v.'s rather plebeian...

ck: Yes, I favored Edwards. Kerry feels like another "so what?"choice.
This
election isn't starting off well. Kerry won the nomination, de facto,
based
on a handful of states. Not the big ones, either. The electoral college
should disappear.
