ck: Bad news for the Dems, then. Kerry's background is Jewish.

I read about that.

Interesting that it's not been brought
 up at all.

Given the interest in Lieberman's candidacy? But acording to some
conventions Kerry isn't Jewish; just like Jack Straw and Peter Mandelson
aren't. (But to anti-Semites they would be.) As you say, he has a Jewish
background.

I added Michael Howard then realised I was wrong: his parents are Jewish. He
used to play down the immigrant aspect but now makes a lot of it, to try to
suggest he knows about the situation and problems of more recent immigrants,
possibly also because he finally realised being the child of people who fled
the Holocaust would gain him sympathy. Anyway: no one here is that
interested in Howard's being Jewish (including Howard) so perhaps no-one is
interested there? (People sometimes comment on Howard's Welsh accent, but
he'll capitalise on that so long as Blair's PM.)

Interesting, too, about Kerry's grandfather's suicide in the '29
stock market crash. (Presumably, this, too, was kept from the senator.)

He was told about it when his father died. (Our papers are almost
cover-to-cover US Pres Election already. The theoretically interesting
question as to how Blair will manage to do a U-turn if Kerry's elected -- A:
with the greatest ease -- has already been asked.)

Wonder what the Skull & Bones crowd think of that.

No Jews Allowed? I didn't know that. (I should have?) Perhaps they can kick
him out retrospectively. (So he did join. I only read that he was invited
to.)

ck: Yes, I favored Edwards. Kerry feels like another "so what?"choice.
This
election isn't starting off well. Kerry won the nomination, de facto,
based
on a handful of states. Not the big ones, either. The electoral college
should disappear

I think Kerry will win the big ones and I don't think Edwards would have
(against Kerry). What I don't know is why that is
(Vietnam War stuff apart).

BTW Kerry's Senate voting record is 96 per cent the same as Teddy
Kennedy's -- which is good news -- the difference, I think, lies in foreign
policy.

There's a University somewhere in the US that's very good at forecasting
the
results of a Presidential Election on one basis alone: the nearness of a
candidate to our Royal Family. >

ck: Bad news for the Dems, then. Kerry's background is Jewish. The name
sounds Irish but his grandfather changed it back in Austria, before
emigrating to the US. Seems this was a deep, dark family secret that
recently came to Kerry's attention. Interesting that it's not been brought
up at all. Interesting, too, about Kerry's grandfather's suicide in the

John Edwards is undoubtedly a far more talented politician
than Kerry and I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that he was also
generally more intelligent. But his c.v.'s rather plebeian...
