ACRL guidelines say that libraries should provide equivalent services to
distance learners as they do for traditional students. Many New England
librarians are striving to do just that given the resources available to them.
On March 9, 2007 LOCI will host two librarians who work with distance
learners and who use Blackboard to facilitate services.
Since 1991, Ed Daniels has been coordinating library services to distance
learners at Southern New Hampshire University (then New Hampshire College)
as the Off-Campus Services Librarian. Ed will summarize how off-campus
library services have developed over the years at SNHU, demonstrate the
current status of his involvement in online classes, and present a picture
of some of the elements that can make up a typical "Day/Night in the Life
of an Off-Campus Services Librarian".
For the past six years April Purcell Levy has been Reference Coordinator
and Instruction Librarian at Lesley University. Prior to working at Lesley,
she was the Off-Campus Services Librarian at Austin Peay State University
in Clarksville, Tennessee. April has worked collaboratively to develop the
contents and structure of the "my library" section of Lesley's portal,
which is powered by Blackboard, and she is currently working with other
librarians at Lesley to develop an Advanced Library Research Community that
will operate similarly to a course in Blackboard.
There is no charge for this meeting, but please RSVP to Stephanie St. Laurence
