Hi
My apologies for cross-posting. In addition to the LOCI mailing list, I
have also used email addresses from past LOCI meetings for this call for
participation.
At the end of the academic year it is time to think about LOCI leadership
for the upcoming year. However, LOCI has never really had a formal system
for chair succession. Usually, someone steps forward to volunteer to keep
the SIG (Special Interest Group) alive when a chair steps down for some
reason. I and others have stepped forward in the past and now I would like
to offer this wonderful opportunity to serve the profession. I have been a
chair or co-chair of LOCI for four out of the last five years and I think
it is time for a fresh outlook. This year I have been co-chair with
Stephanie St. Laurence from Tufts who has been a great asset to the SIG.
She will be staying on for the upcoming year.
As you know, LOCI's area of interest is online course information and the
library's role in distance learning, especially with course management
systems. As distance learning becomes more pervasive in academia, LOCI's
contribution to New England librarianship can be a valuable resource to us
all. If you have a strong interest in this area and have good ideas you
would like to share, perhaps the LOCI chair is for you.
As for the time commitment, the chair(s) organize 2-3 LOCI meetings and
attend about 4 ACRL/NEC board meetings a year. (Each SIG gets one vote even
if both co-chairs are present.) Becoming an ACRL/NEC SIG chair is an
excellent opportunity to demonstrate leadership in the regional library
community.
If you are at all interested in becoming chair, please call or write to me
soon for more details. On the off chance that I will be overwhelmed with
responses, we can organize an online election.
Thanks for your consideration.
Jim
