Dear LOCI members and interested parties,
Academic librarians in New England have had great success in the last
few years learning the basics of "how academic libraries are linking
electronic resources with web-based course information software" through
our LOCI (Librarians on Online Course Information) Special Interest
Group. Libraries have been undergoing rapid change in this field even as
software has developed and its uses expanded. The fact that librarian
skill sets also need expansion and more focused direction is being
recognized by our organization. The ACRL New England Board, which
includes our SIG chairs for LOCI, is responding to these changing
environments and technology training needs. We have determined that
future ongoing training and programming topics dealing with course
management systems, instructional design, and distance learning blend
more strongly and can best be carried out by our current Special
Interest Groups NELIG (New England Library Instruction Group) and ITIG
(Information Technology Interest Group). For that reason, we are
planning to dissolve LOCI. We will be moving our programming forward by
streamlining those topics into our two very active interest groups NELIG
and ITIG. If you have a very strong desire to see a continuation of LOCI
for 2008/09, please write your reasons (please be specific) and include
your indication to help with planning future programs and assuming a
leadership role. Please contact LOCI co-chairs Beth Rohloff
(beth.r-@tufts.edu) and Stephanie St. Laurence
(stephanie.-@tufts.edu) and copy chapter president Melissa
Behney (melissa-@conncoll.edu) by Sept. 15, 2008.
