If you had installed a different crank as well, you might be on to
something, but given that you've just replaced the rings, you're
probably on to something.
I'm assuming this is square taper rather than spline drive. Park Tool
has a nice howto, including a link to appropriate torque here:

Being a Stanford mech-e, I'm generally inclined to believe his well
reasoned arguments against age-old bicycle industry and repair canon,
