It was going to be 1100 related, then I chickened out...
I may have an opportunity to go vintage racing in the future, and as a
requirement for aquiring a racing licence, had to attend race car
driving school over the weekend. My plan was to take Felix, but I
figured if I had him out on the rece track I would end up piling him
into the tires, or worse....
So the decision was made to get a "modern" car that would be up to the
challenge. I found an 81 BMW 320i and a deal was struck and off I went.
Let me say this, it was a humbling experience. Everyone thinks that they
are a good driver and I was no exception. Well, let's just say there was
room for improvement, lot's of improvement.
Long story short, we were able to spend two days on track with a
dedicated racing instructor who taught us the intricacies of apexes,
heel & toe shifting, smoothness, passing, being passed, and anything
else we would encounter on the race track. I had set the odometer before
we went out and it read over 170 kms of on track time! (2 km road
course)
The Beemer may not have been the perfect choice, with it's sacked out
suspension and Wal-mart tires, but it was a great learning tool!
At the beginning of the weekend I was overshooting corners with all 4
wheels locked, steering hard over, and getting nowhere; to
sling-shotting out of the same corner under full throttle while in a
controlled four wheel drift towards a concrete wall... It was more fun
than humans should be allowed to have!
If you have an opportunity to take a racing course, I highly recommend
it, you will be a better driver as a result.
Now if anyone has a Bugeye racecar for sale...
