Hi everyone,
I know a lot of Life Science teachers do dissections this time of year,
so I thought I would share one of my favorite ones with you. This is an
easy dissection to do, and the smelliest!
This is just my personal opinion, but do not use the squids from the
science suppy companies, they are like trying to dissect a rubber boot
and the kids won't get much out of them.
What I used was food grade "Calamari" which is inexpensive and easy to
buy in bulk at your local supermarket (at least in NJ it is!). They
come in frozen "brick" cardboard boxes and there are several dozen in
the box, I think its 3-5 pounds worth of squid. This is where the
smelly part come in, you have to let them thaw out at least overnight,
and your room will smell like a fish market, but its worth it!
You can have one small squid per 2-3 students, and I have a detailed lab
to go with it. The best part is that the students can use the squid ink
to write their initials on a piece of paper! I have included other
resources for you to use as well.
