threatened

Help Support Trails, Walking and Bicycling TODAY!

Your voice is urgently needed! The U.S. Senate is scheduled to vote on
eliminating walking and biking funds today, September 16.

You can call both your senators--and help put a stop to this--by following
the instructions here:

   http://capwiz.com/lab/callalert/index.tt?alertid=14032801

Or simply call/email our Senators directly. For Missouri:

   Sen. Claire McCaskill:
     (202) 224-6154

   Sen Kit Bond:
     (202) 224-5721

   Message: Please support bicycling, walking,
and trails and oppose Amendments 2370 and 2371
proposed by Senators McCain and Coburn.

Back in 2003, a few members of Congress tried to eliminate Enhancements
Funding--the main source of funding for bicycle, pedestrian, and trails
projects in the U.S.

That effort was soundly defeated--but only after a huge tidal wave of
ordinary people like you took the time to call or email their members of
Congress.

Now we need to do it again:

THE DETAILS ABOUT THE ATTACK ON BIKE/PED FUNDING

Yesterday, Senators John McCain (Ariz.) and Tom Coburn (Okla.) issued two
amendments to the FY10 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development
appropriations bill. If passed, these amendments would eliminate the
majority of available federal funds for trails, walking and bicycling.

Amendment 2370 would prohibit the use of federal funds for pedestrian or
bicycle facilities, efforts to reduce vehicle collisions with wildlife, or
other specified Transportation Enhancement (TE) projects if the Highway
Trust Fund cannot cover unfunded highway authorizations.

This will have the effect of eliminating all of this funding from this time
forward.

Amendment 2371 would allow states to eliminate spending on TE, the nation's
largest funding source for trails, walking and bicycling. Congress
currently sets aside a portion of federal funds for TE to support these
projects in all states.

Providing opportunities for Americans to walk, bike and take transit to get
where they're going improves our communities' health and livability,
reduces emissions, creates jobs and save money.

Please act now—call your senator and ask him or her to vote against the
proposed amendments.
