One great way to exercise safely on a bike are the banked circular =20
tracks like the one I used in north St louis years ago and if we =20
recommend these be built in many areas where it is just too dangerous =20=

to do street riding more people might bike???

 Brent,

Would sure like to see a community in the Park Land receive a grant =20=

of this type. What would be step #1--maybe we can spent some time =20
brainstorming about this while you are here for the weekend =20
Oct9-12. The new economic development person for Farmington might =20
be interested. He is to attend the meeting we have with Engler's =20
legislative assistant on friday. I would be interested in helping =20
as well.

Received an e-mail today stating that Rep. Faith would meet with =20
some bicycle advocates at 4:00pm on Monday the 12th at the st. Louis =20=

Bread Company on Zumbehl. I personally cannot make that meeting, =20
can you? our appointment with Rep Tilley has been firmly confirmed =20=

for 11:20 in Perryville for that same day--that should give you =20
plenty of time to drive to St. Charles. Correct? I understand you =20=

will try to get some MO bikE Fed members from the st. charles area =20
to attend with you.

Later I will type up a detailed list of the legislative contact =20
meetings scheduled for your trip on Oct 8-12 and e-mail it to you.

Subject: [MoBikeFed-Chat] You Could Benefit =46rom CDC Awarding $373 =20=

 Million to U.S. Comm

FYI:

---------

Alliance Leaders,

Please read this special alert about millions of potential dollars =20
for bike/ped in U.S. communities. The full alert is on our website =20
at: =
http://www.peoplepoweredmovement.org/site/index.php/site/memberservices/cd=
c_releases_grant_application_for_hundreds_of_millions_in_community_preven/=

Through the new Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) grant =20=

program, the CDC will award $373 million to 30 to 40 communities =20
throughout the country to reduce obesity and tobacco use. The =20
program is an opportunity for bicycle and pedestrian advocates and =20
local and state health departments to work together to secure =20
significant funding to increase walking and bicycling for =20
transportation and recreation.
Summary: On September 17, 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and =20=

Prevention announced a new program: Communities Putting Prevention =20
to Work. Thirty to forty communities will receive a total of $373 =20
million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (stimulus) dollars =20=

through this competitive grant program to support interventions that =20=

reduce obesity (through improved physical activity and nutrition) =20
and/or reduce tobacco use. Communities can apply for either focus =20
area or both. This landmark opportunity is aimed at mobilizing =20
community resources toward broad-based policy, systems, =20
organizational and environmental changes. The application places an =20=

emphasis on communities demonstrating effective coalitions, and =20
notes that special consideration should be given to the inclusion of =20=

populations disproportionately affected by chronic diseases.

On September 29, 2009 the Department of Health and Human Services =20
(HHS) announced the release of $120 million in American Recovery and =20=

Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds for prevention and wellness programs =20
for U.S. states and territories, building on the recent announcement =20=

of the $373 million funding opportunity for communities and tribes =20
around the country. In all, the comprehensive Communities Putting =20
Prevention to Work initiative will make $650 million available for =20
public health efforts to address obesity, increase physical =20
activity, improve nutrition, and decrease smoking.

Lead Applicants: Local and State Health Departments

Deadlines: Letter of Intent Deadline: October 30, 2009 Application =20=

 Deadline: December 1, 2009

The Opportunity for Bike/Ped Advocates: Communities Putting =20
Prevention to Work provides an important opportunity for bicycle and =20=

pedestrian professionals, enthusiasts, and advocates, as well as =20
health officials, to act quickly to get your city or state to:
Apply for the funding;
Educate the health department about the range of bike/ped =20
interventions that can be included in their application and action =20
plan; and
Include your organization as a partner in the effort.
The Alliance for Biking & Walking has worked with our partners at =20
America Bikes and the Safe Routes to School National Partnership to =20=

prepare a l ist of sample bike/ped activities that fit within the =20
five categories of evidence-based interventions that are required as =20=

part of this CDC application. We encourage you to review these =20
sample activities and assess which would work well in your =20
community. Funds are available to make these projects a reality=E2=80=94=
so =20
it is in your interest to work with your health department to develo=20=

p the bike/ped aspects of the CDC application for obesity prevention=20=

, and to demonstrate how your organization can be a resource to them=20=

. Act Now to Contact Your Health Department and City Officials: Now=20=

is the time to contact your health department and city officials to=20=

encourage them to apply, and to share your ideas on bike/ped interv=20=

entions. Don=E2=80=99t wait =E2=80=93 health departments are making =
