Senate increases transportation funding in Climate Bill

You may remember that one of the major asks in the most recent
National Bike Summit was for "CLEAN TEA"--that is, the idea that the
U.S.l would reinvest 10% of any amount generated by a proposed
climate protection plan, into clean, green transportation options.
That only makes sense--because fully 1/3 of greenhouse gases
generated in the U.S. are from transportation.
And one reason our transportation system is so polluting is because
we have failed to put a reasonable investment into transportation
options like bicycling and walking (and, of course, transit and others).
The House version of the climate bill included 1% for transportation.
The Senate bill--recently out of committee--more than doubled that to 2.44%.
More info below--and if you'd like to ask our Missouri senators for
their support, just click here:

Note that Missouri Senator Kit Bond is on the Environment and Public
Works Committee, which passed this legislation. (And regardless of
his vote for or against the final version of the bill, you can be
sure that Bond played an important role in shaping the bill as it
went through committee.) So it would be very important to thank
Senator Bond for his support.

Victory for clean transportation in Senate climate bill!
Your activism worked! After hearing from you and their colleagues in
the Senate, the authors of the Senate climate bill have agreed to
include a higher, guaranteed level of funding for clean
transportation options, such as public transportation, affordable
neighborhoods around transit stops, vanpooling and streets safe for
walking and biking.
Thank you for your help in this huge victory! Now, take a moment to
pass on the thanks to your senators. There's still a long road ahead
for the climate bill and your senators need to know you will support
their efforts to continue fighting for more money for clean transportation!

Transportation reform IS health care reform!
With the debate over health care reform dominating the news,
Transportation for America brought physicians, health policy experts
and Julia Lopez, a 14-year-old who advocates for children's health,
to Capitol Hill in order to highlight the often neglected impact
that transportation has on our health.
In more than 35 meetings with legislators and staff, the group
explained how where we live, work and play has a profound impact on
the rates of obesity, diabetes, asthma and other quality of life
measures. And they connected the dots to policies that can keep us
healthier by reducing exposure to pollution, increasing walkability
and making physical activity a normal part of our daily routine.
