I have served on the State level of government; I have been mayor of a
major city. I believe the closer you get to the people, the more
responsible government is. I believe that to be true.”

*- Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK), 2/9/2012*

*We agree! Tell your Senator to support the Cardin-Cochran
amendment<http://action.smartgrowthamerica.org/salsa/track.jsp?v=2&c=cNHDEGllT5hdeJ7TUhyQGsrziRjf9u33>

Dear Brent,

While we continue to work hard to stop the disastrous House transportation
bill, *there’s a chance right now to win a big improvement in the Senate’s
version. *

A critical amendment would *give local governments a large say over a small
share of their state’s transportation dollars that can be used to
revitalize their main streets and make them safer for everyone who needs to
use them. *

*Can you take just a minute to tell your two Senators to support the
Cardin-Cochran amendment?<http://action.smartgrowthamerica.org/salsa/track.jsp?v=2&c=jbAsiRxVbAImchfh0KOQIgG68vSiV6FP>
** (S.Amd 1549)*

This bipartisan amendment sponsored by Senator Cardin of Maryland and
Senator Cochran of Mississippi would fix a provision *that takes
transportation choices away from local governments,* by giving the state
sole power over the limited funds once dedicated to important
transportation projects that improve local communities.

This amendment *would restore that control and choice back to local
governments to invest in small projects in their communities*. The state
could not take the money away unless local communities didn’t apply for the
funds or had no eligible ideas for how to use it. At that point the state
could spend that money on other priorities. *Win-win, right?*

*The Cardin-Cochran Amendment is about empowering local governments to
revitalize their communities while building out a full transportation
network and making it safe for everyone. *

The vote could happen any day this week. *So please tell your Senator to
vote for the Cardin-Cochran
amendment*<http://action.smartgrowthamerica.org/salsa/track.jsp?v=2&c=Gw3Q5CwKGaLgqIy7Hi2gBMrziRjf9u33>.
The time is ticking down.

Thanks for your support,

Stephen Lee Davis
Deputy Communications Director
