Dear Barry

I hope that you enjoyed the Prom last night. I had to listen on my laptop
with a fairly slow internet connection, so I was a bit disappointed with the
result but I imagine it was much better in the RAH. A friend of mine has
recorded the BBC4 broadcast for me so I am looking forward to seeing that.

I've read the responses on the R3 Messageboards - some of the reactions were
predictably negative but it was good to see that several people actually
enjoyed the Moeran symphony and enquired about other works.

Sorry not to have been able to be there to meet you and discuss things. What
was the "intriguing information" that Bax-of-delights" mentioned in his
Messageboard posting?

All the best

Ian

Hello Ian

Good to hear from you. Are you coming to the Prom on 23rd July?

Did you read Simon Heffer's Telegraph article on the Symphony? His
biographical research on EJM wasn't very thorough, was it.

Regards

Barry

Subject: Moeran's School Prizes

Normally, I would have posted this on the Moeran Forum but it has become so
polluted with spam recently that it's getting difficult to read.

Does anybody have any information about Moeran's School Prizes? According to
Barry's Chronology, while he was at Uppingham, he won the "Speech Day prize"
for Violin and Piano in 1909 and the "Speech Day prize" for Piano in 1911.
Additionally, the volume of Beethoven Piano Sonatas in the Moeran Archive in
Melbourne suggests that it was a Prize from Suffield Park School in 1908.

Thus we have (probably):

1908       Suffield Park School Prize - Beethoven Sonatas

1909       Uppingham School Violin Prize and Piano Prize (2 prizes?) - ?

1911       Uppingham School Piano Prize - book by Parry on Music Theory

Can anybody add more detail or make corrections to this list?

Regards

Ian Maxwell
