Welcome Message
---------------
I don't often run special editions but the timing of this one made
it impossible to print in our next regular edition since it will
have already happened. We ALWAYS like to hear what Alumni are doing
and welcome submissions such as the one below to showcase what some
Alumni are doing. Thanks to Tammi Chun for submitting.
I hope you all had a Happy Halloween. It was a blast for me as the
company I work for (HMAA) goes all out for Halloween. We actually
built a Shrek set complete with his house, a swamp, a bridge over
lava and the many cartoon characters. I hope you all had a lot of fun
and got a lot of good candy.
If you are in Hawaii go and support Eric Byler (MoHS '90) and take
some time to see his film or one of the many other films at the
Hawaii International Film Festival http://www.hiff.org/

"Notably cinematic storytelling, suggesting influence from the
school of minimalist Asian cinema... Byler wisely bypasses
dramatic fireworks or what emerges as a more despairing and
bittersweet denouement than might have been expected.
The deft shading he elicits from his thesps is of a piece with his
dramatics and his understated, artful approach to compositions
and movement."
--Robert Koehler, Daily Variety
"A resounding success. ...A well constructed, engaging piece of
finely wrought emotion that avoids preaching and manages to heighten
our sympathy for all of the characters involved with the mistakes they
make rather than the things they do right."
--Moriarty, Ain't It Cool News
"A compelling character drama professionally acted by a convincing
(and attractive) ensemble cast that hums with chemistry. ...Charlotte
Sometimes'shifting triangular relationships with their added context of
Asian-American cultural bipolarity, and Byler's treatment of sex as a
very hot, urgent, but ultimately selfish and manipulative act are
especially intriguing aspects of the film."
--Todd Harbour, Kamera.co.uk
"A remarkably resonant independent film that touches on issues of
identity, intimacy and fate with the support of a small, accomplished
cast. Byler sets the dramatic action in a subtly charged atmosphere of
sexuality and racial tension, carefully modulating the film's tone to
shade his characters' struggles."
--Justin Lowe, NAATA
"It is rare enough to see a film where the director understands the
art of emotional restraint and the actors follow through with
exquisitely
nuanced performances; when the film is stunning and atmospheric and
happens to be made by and with Asian-Americans, it's almost too good to
be true."
--Janet Yang, Producer of The Joy Luck Club
