you kept them at least so far... Speaking of the new year

reunion classes so if possible they can synchronize their
dates to match Alumni Day. So if you are on your classes
reunion committee or know if somebody that is please contact
us. We are focusing on:

Also remember we do accept submissions to print items in
this newsletter from all Alumni so tell us about yourself,
your life, your job... we're here for you.

Finally We had information on a Moanalua Middle School
Fundraiser and also a press releas from James Tanaka
on behalf of his sister Jamie Tanaka (1978). Please
take a moment to look at those and help if you can.

Have a great Martin Luther King Jr Day, Superbowl and

Press Release - Tanaka's
----------------------------

Editors Note: Buzz's wife Jamie Tanaka is a 1987 graduate
of Moanalua. Her brother Wes is a 1979 grad and her
sister Tammy is an 1981 grad. This release was submitted
by her other brother James Tanaka. Per our policy we
welcome any type of release that pertaining to Alumni
since we know many Alumni on this list have gone to school
with the Tanakas. We at the association wish the family
well and hope Buzz continues to improve.

PRESS RELEASE

RE: ESTABLISHMENT OF MARK ?BUZZ? AKAMINE BENEFIT FUND

While not a household name, Mark Akamine or ?Buzz? as he
likes to be called, was a family man and loving father of
five (5), a supportive husband, dedicated worker, a huge
UH sports fan, and an avid surfer. But all that suddenly
changed on November 6th, when while working, Buzz suffered
a massive stroke that has left him near comatose, bed
ridden, and unable to speak, move or swallow. At only 46
years of age, there was so much more he was looking forward
to; most importantly with his children, who range in age from
5 to 21. Most recently, Buzz had hopes of attending, his
eldest childs?s (Taryn) graduation this spring from Lewis
& Clark College in Oregon. Like her Dad, Taryn had great
hope for the future and looked forward to pursuing a
Masters Degree in International Relations, but all that
changed for her as well on November 6th. Buzz was a simple
man with simple pleasures, but loved by so many.

While Buzz has been making small improvements daily, the
long-term prognosis is extremely bleak. Due to the extent
of his injuries, Buzz is not a candidate for acceptance
into a rehabilitation center, and will need long-term
nursing services for many years to come, if not the
remaining years of his life. While the family is hopeful
that the government will assist with some portion of the
anticipated $6,000 in monthly nursing costs, there is
great concern over the coming years, as Jamie (Buzz?s
wife) struggles alone to meet the financial needs of
their large family. Despite the hardships, Jamie continues
to keep her spirits high and keep her family together,
and through it all, has even continued to provide a home
and care for not only her own family, but also a non-family
friend who was in desperate need of a place to stay

Concerned friends and relatives of the Akamine Family have
established this fund to assist the family with mounting
medical bills, future nursing care costs, and daily living
expenses. If you would like to assist the family, donations
and contributions can be made at any First Hawaiian Bank
Branch in the name of the Mark ?Buzz? Akamine Benefit Fund;
or mailed to:

First Hawaiian Bank
Mark ?Buzz? Akamine Benefit Fund
1580 Kapiolani Blvd.
Honolulu, HI 96814

As both the Star Bulletin and the Advertiser have refused to
issue this press release on our behalf, please fax, mail or
pass this on to everyone and anyone that may be willing to
further our cause. With little options in getting the word-out
to the public, I am hoping that through this letter-by-letter,
word-of-mouth campaign, that in shear numbers we can all make
a difference for The Akamine family during the difficult years
ahead. To date, Jamie and her family have refused hand-outs and
the support of hundreds of well wishers, friends and relatives;
but I am hopeful that through the establishment of the Mark
?Buzz? Akamine Benefit Fund, that the Akamine?s will be more
open and accepting of the generosity and love surrounding them.

For those that have already done so much to assist the Akamine
Family on an hour-by-hour, and day-to-day basis, during this
extremely difficult period ? we are forever grateful & deeply
appreciative! For more information please contact: James Tanaka
(808) 223-9363.
