Welcome Message
---------------
Well here we are in February and it seems as though the year has
only just started. Hard to believe we are almost two months into
the year already.
I would like to take a moment to remind classes of 1998, 1993,
1988, 1983, 1978, 1973 or any other reunion classes to keep us
up to date by sending reunion information to us.
We have a great issue for you this month. As a special our
friend Berny Lai from the Class of 1977 has jotted down some
tidbits from people in the Northwest which I'm sure you will
enjoy. We are hoping to convince her to do more future ones
but just in case we broke up her update into two parts. We
also feature Kelvin Chun who has won an Ed Tech awards and
finally feature an article called the Cosmic Time Bank. It's
really and experiment I'm running to add on an extra article
each issue to add content. Feel free to comment both positively
and negatively on that idea.
Also remember we do accept submissions to print items in
this newsletter from all Alumni so tell us about yourself,
your life, your job... we're here for you.
Until next month....

A Northwest Aloha - Part 1
--------------------------
By Bernadette Lai (c/o 1977)
Editors Note: This is part 1 of at least a two part
series. Hopefully she will write more cause its very
well done. We also welcome comments or similiar alumni
updates from you out there. Also if you have comments
for Berny we will gladly forward them to her.
Janice (Chun) Ikeda had a fabulous photo in Honolulu Magazine's issue
on "who are we" she represented the 40 something chinese woman.
Janice still looks the same as she did in high school with her great
smile and slim build and definitely does not look 40! (I wish I knew her
secret). If you like chinese food, her mom owns the Wah Kung
restaurant in Mapunapuna.
I got together with Mich (Michiko Kele) Earle and Lei Ann Shiramizu
yesterday to "catch up" and share photos of our 25th (yikes!) class
reunion last summer. The three of us live in Seattle and heard that
there are more of our classmates in the Northwest as well; Anastasia
(Stacy Horner) Reed and Lisa & Leila (Takahashi) Chun & ???. Mark
Taylor - our class president arranged for us to have our reunion at the
REALLY NICE Oahu Country Club. He was not able to make the reunion be
cause he was in . . . Seattle for a business seminar. About 40 or so
of our class showed up for the event. Rodney Felton was a guest at
the class of '76's reunion the prior year so he invited one of their's
to our reunion. Robert (Bobby)Tidd joined us from California. His
sister Barbara was actually in our class but did not make the reunion.
I think the all classes reunion was a great idea. It was really fun
to see how the school has grown and to reunite with people from other
classes and the neighborhood. I wish more of those who live in the
area would have participated. It was great to see our wonderful class
advisor Mrs. Julliette Tom, Mr. Kosewski and Ms. Masako Iwami. I
received a beautiful christmas card from Ms. Iwami; who by the way went
to high school with my father! She also knew my older brother Willie
from working at her alma mater, Farrington High school; prior to
coming to Moanalua. Willie coached Moanalua JV Basketball for our
school.
Our class has accumulated quite a bit of memorabilia; 2 completed -
photo albums from high school through reunions 1, 3, 5, 10 & 15 and
have some loose photos from our 20th & 25th reunions to organize. Very
fun to look at old photos and laugh, reminicse, and laugh some more.
Mark Taylor also has a collection of Newsletters from "the early
days". I think our school's first newspaper was a sports newspaper.
Gary Hyvonen worked on that endeavor and has been a sports writer in San
Diego for many years. Passions developed in high school can turn into
careers.
As for myself, the skill I developed by being on high school prom
committees was calligraphy writing; not really fancy but nice enough for
handwritten invitations (do people still do that?). Ronald Nakayama
was our one-man publicity committee and designed all our event
posters (this of course is WAY before computers); he now has his own
graphic arts business. Going back to passions developed in high school.
Tracy (Wong) Anicas met her husband Steven in 1975 at a high school
student exchange program between MOHS and Ka'u High on the big island;
Principal James Kim's former post. The Anicas' will be celebrating 25
years of marriage next year. Lori (Lum) Galera also met her husband
through high school channels and he is now the Principal at Moanalua.
Just remember to JOIN THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION and go to your reunions;
people want to see if they remember you. Don't worry, we all laugh at
who we used to be. In fact, I still laugh at who I've become.
-- Stay tuned next month for part II coming to your e-mail box in
March.

The Cosmic Bank Account
-----------------------------------------------
Reprinted by permission
From the book "Contemporary Parables"
by Robert Elias Najemy
Each of us has a cosmic bank account in which are recorded all our
thoughts, words and actions since the beginning of our lives here on the
earth. Our selfish actions are withdrawals from this account. Our
selfless
actions are our deposits.
We come into this life with a certain balance which only the cosmic
accountant knows. We may have a surplus or a deficit. As with all bank
accounts, when we have a deficit, it means that we owe certain amounts
to
various people. We owe them because we have acted selfishly towards them
in
the past. And thus we suffer what seems on the surface to be injustices
from
them. It seems to be injustice because we do not know where our account
stands with respect to that person, or with respect to life itself. We
do
not remember that we have treated them badly in the past and the debt is
being paid.
The cosmic accountant never makes a mistake, nor does he get involved in
the
exchanges. He neither rewards or punishes. He is not a policeman or
judge -
just an accountant. He sees that every account is balanced, sooner or
later.
So, if we are giving love and helping others and receiving only abuse in
return, it may be because we have come into this life with a deficit in
our
account. We have come to make deposits of love, kindness and service
until
the account is balanced. Gradually the account will start to have a
surplus
and we will eventually start to receive our interest in the form of
inner
peace, happiness, harmony with ourselves and the environment.
Every deposit we make in the present changes our balance and thus leads
to a
happier reality.
Trust in the cosmic accountant.
He does not have favorites.
You are getting exactly what you should, based on your previous and
present
deposits and withdrawals.
Keep making deposits and avoiding withdrawals and you will become very
happy
and spiritually rich.
