Welcome Message
---------------

It's Saint Patrick's Day as I write this. Hope you all had a nice
and green day and found your pot of gold. In this months issue
we conclude a two part series from Berny Lai in the "Northwest".
I hope you have enjoyed it and we always encourage submissions.

It looks like we are on the road to war with Iraq so I felt it
was timely to include an article "No Need To Be Afraid of Fear".
This is the second in a continuing series of articles that
we have been given permission to reprint. I hope that all our
friends and family in the gulf can finish their mission and
return home safely soon.

I would like to take a moment to remind classes of 1998, 1993,
1988, 1978, 1973 or any other reunion classes to keep us
up to date by sending reunion information to us.

Also remember we do accept submissions to print items in
this newsletter from all Alumni so tell us about yourself,
your life, your job... we're here for you.

Until next month....

A Northwest Aloha - Part 2
--------------------------
By Bernadette Lai (c/o 1977)

Editors Note: This is part 2 of a Northwest Aloha. Part
1 appeared in our February issue.

From the very handy e-mail: I heard from Eddie Casupang now living in
the San Diego area. He shared sad news of the passing of Mike ('77)
& Richard ('79) Zane's father. Also recently reconnected with
ex-moanaluans Noel (Lam) Nelson and her brother Rodney Lam ('75) via
email forwarded by mutual friends; they both work for Boeing Corp.
We are hoping to actually meet up with them at a hawaiian event here
in Seattle in a couple of weeks.

I am currently a Concierge at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel and recently
elected to Treasurer of the Seattle Hotel Concierge Association. If
you're in the area come say "howzit".

In Closing, (whew) For a class of just over 200 students; where our
class officers were half male, half female, 2 locals, 2 military, a
jock, a japanese, filipino, caucasian and black, where 3 went to
Princeton, 1 went to the Naval academy & 1 scored perfect on the
Math SAT, we turned out okay. Our class consists of educators (high
school and a college professor), business owners, writers, business
agents (Henry Ko for Konishiki),nurses, doctors, a gold medal
olympian, fulltime moms & at least 1 fulltime dad, we work at the bank,
at Long's Drugs, Hawaiian Airlines, in the hotels, in insurance, in
real estate at the golf course and in the computer field; we even have
2 cops a couple of criminals and a missionary. We cover all aspects of
the work spectrum from line workers to CEO's to the unemployed; we work
for bad bosses and good bosses we are the bad bosses and the good
bosses.
We have experienced death and birth, mental illness and life's
struggles.
But we all shared that time in the grey buildings on the hill.

It's great to take time and reflect back and remember who we used to
be; when the most important thing was homework, psyching up for the
next game or interlude with the opposite sex. Just remember to JOIN
THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION and go to your reunions; people want to see if
they remember you. Don't worry, we all laugh at who we used to be.
In fact, I still laugh at who I've become.

Bernadette (Berny) Lai
Class of 1977 from the Pacific Northwest

Addendum:

Lei Ann also class of 1977 adds:

Also, along with running his own side biz, Ron Nakayama is a super
big wig at the largest ad agency in Honolulu, Star Siegle. He is
the Creative Director there, I believe, and a most excellent one
at that.

And hey, you failed to mention how beeeaaauuutiful we are?

Yup we get letters and today here's one from Kawika. Thanks to
you and your fellow service people for keeping us all safe. We
wish you success and a safe return... Too bad we can't send a
plate lunch via e-mail.

Aloha,

Just in case you pray at the meetings, please keep us in mind.
Since graduating C/O '96, I've joined the US Air Force and am now
a Munitions Systems Craftsman Technician with the rank of Staff
Sergeant. I am currently deployed in support of Operation
Northern Watch at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey. By the looks of it,
most of us currently deployed will be here longer than the originally
scheduled 3-month rotation. Most of us have significant others
and I myself have a 6-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son that we
have left back on the mainland. Fortunately, there are several
of us here from the Islands. There has been some instances of
onolicious food. In fact, Pali Boy's (C/O '89) wife is here also.

Well, just giving you an update. Thanks for sending me updates.
'Till later...

No Need To Be Afraid of Fear
--------------------------------
Reprinted by permission
By Cathy Goodwin

Several years, I was listening to a radio talk show hosted by a
psychologist. A young woman caller announced, "I just got
accepted to medical school!"

"Congratulations!" said the host. "That's terrific."

"And," continued the caller, "I'm scared to death."

"Of course you are!" said the host. "Just don't be paralyzed.
Keep going. Work in and through the fear."

I was reminded of that call recently, when someone said, "People
who go through transitions are fearful."

"And well they should be!" I replied. "There's a lot to be afraid
of in a transition."

"You are being negative!"

"On the contrary! During a transition, you've got lots of things
going on. And lots of people are standing by, waiting to take
your money. You'd do well to be scared. You have a better chance
of coming out ahead. How much more positive can we get?"

"But fear is bad."

"No. Fear can be your friend. Fear is a signal from your
intuition that you need to be vigilant."

"But you can't make decisions based on fear."

"No. But if you're feeling scared, pay attention to what's going
on. Deal with the fear first. If you're trying to decide whether
to quit your job, fear can help you make a good plan. Fear of
getting sick can lead to a healthy diet, exercise and insurance."

"What if you're paralyzed?"

"When you feel paralyzed by fear, take some action. Any action.
Start moving. See if you feel the fear easing up. You can also
work on your anxieties by writing in a journal or talking to
someone you trust. As you write or talk, you may feel less
scared."

"What if you are still terrified?"

"Full scale panic attacks call for professional treatment from a
qualified therapist. If your fear is holding you back from
reaching your goals, you need to seek professional help. For
instance, if your job calls for driving and you're afraid to
drive on the freeway, you need to talk to a psychologist who
deals with phobias."

"What can a coach do?"

"Coaches can help you look at the facts in a new way. A coach can
help you decide if your fear is realistic and, if so, how to
deal with it. A coach can remind you that most people entering a
transition will be scared."

"Any warnings?"

"Yes. Don't let anyone dismiss your fears. Only you can tell if
fear comes from your intuition or if this particular fear is
blocking your intuition."

"SoŠfear is not something to be afraid of."

"I believe fear is a friend, a message from intuition."

"Roosevelt said, in a whole different context, 'The only thing
left to fear is fear itself.' You're saying, "The only thing left
to fear is fear of fear."

"You got it."
