Message from Philip Wong (c/o 1975)
The time for Moanalua High School Football has finally arrived. I’ve
been waiting 32 years for any type of championship in football. I
actually thought that this day could never happen in my lifetime. Isn’t
it wonderful that the OIA created more than one division? Lester says
it is quite common on the mainland, because there are such a wide range
of the “haves” and the “have not”. In any case, this Friday is it baby.
I won’t miss this game for the world.
Back in 1973, when Moanalua played its’ first ever varsity game, Coach
Alan Takamori made a pre-game speech in the locker room. He pulled out
a letter written by the late Coach John Velasco. The letter stated that
Radford would defeat Moanalua so badly that no student from RHS would
ever want to transfer to our school again. He may have lost some
players like Al Holomalia and David Fontes. In any case Radford won 39
to 0. Yes, the next year Al and David did transfer to Radford. Even
Calvin Shimomura doesn’t remember that speech. I still remember it as
if it was yesterday. To this day, I’ve always wondered if that letter
was genuine or not. However, I know Coach Takamori would not make this
up.
A few years later in 1975, Moanalua played its’ first game at Aloha
Stadium. Since I was going to Loyola Marymount University, I didn’t see
the game. However, Lester said that we lost to Radford 60 something to
0. Losing to Radford such was depressing back then.
Well, its been some thirsty plus years and this championship game will
be against our district rival Radford High School. Win or lose, Coach
Martinez is doing an excellent job with the varsity football program.
Last Tuesday night, I actually watched the boys practice from my
apartment. They were making so much noise. Some of them must have been
so excited.
