Driving along on the West Coast of the South Island of NZ for the
first time since 1990, and it hits me again just how weird the
environment is here. We're a little bubble of metal, glass and music
surrounded by miles and miles of primeval forest and soaring
mountains. Essentially nothing in every direction but trees and
sandflies. It's great.
Aaron and I have been camping. Last night we set up by a beautiful,
glass-flat lake which seemed to be basically undisturbed by anything
except the trout Aaron spotted catching mosquitos as the sun came
down. The steady rumbling trail of campervans notwithstanding, this
is still a peaceful place, even right alongside the highway.
At Franz Josef village now, about to head out to see the glacier. I'm
looking forward to this. Truly is spectacular.
Peace all,
