Eph. 5:1,20
Be ye therefore followers of God, as
dear children;.... Giving thanks always for
all things unto God and the Father in the
name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
Hymn #219, “Because I Have Been Given Much”
Sonnet 510 Reflections on Ephesians 5: 1,20
By Tom Matkin, July 28, 2009
I might be thankful for that and for this
For blessings of good fortune and of wealth
For friends and kin and for my marriage bliss
And love and peace and comfort and good health.
And even trouble, to my earthly eyes
Is sometimes plainly for my lasting good
As lessons learned in pain become a prize
That’s sweet because it’s better understood.
And yet we often cannot see the why
Or slightest reason in this mortal day
For certain things that may afflict and try
And seem to leave no trace of wisdom’s way.
Yet if by giving thanks our faith is tried
The value of the test can’t be denied.
