1 Tim. 4:12
Let no man despise thy youth; but be
thou an example of the believers, in word,
in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in
faith, in purity.
Hymn #254, “True to the Faith”
Sonnet 514 Reflections on 1 Timothy 4:12
By Tom Matkin August 3, 2009
The youth himself will sometimes most despise
His opportunity to show belief
Believing that in other people’s eyes
His standing is irrelevant and brief.
And so as if humility was his
He carries on unmindful of his chance
To set a good example of what is
In fact, his Christian duty to advance.
And even worse sometimes this grand mistake
Leads to the casual habit of distain
For any actual effort made to shake
Behaviors unacceptable and vain.
So if you want the better path to truth
Become a good example in your youth.
