Alma 12:31
31 Wherefore, he gave commandments unto men, they having first
transgressed the first commandments as to things which were
temporal, and becoming as Gods, knowing good from evil, placing
themselves in a state to act, or being placed in a state to act
according to their wills and pleasures, whether to do evil or to
do good--

Sonnet 658 Reflections on Alma 12:31

It's worse than just the comic's silly line
“The devil made me do it” as excuse
It's worse than any caterwauling whine
That claims a victim's crown for every bruise.

It's worse than resignation or defeat
It's worse than even apathy's deep freeze
It's worse than being constantly downbeat
It's worse than any sickness or disease.

To think you cannot act is to deny
The hand, the justice and the plan of God
To contradict the very reason why
You came to be. And substitute a fraud.

You are not rock or rain or dirt or sod
You have the will to act. A gift from God.
