Sonnet 661 Reflections on Alma 12:24  Tom

Alma 12:34
34 Therefore, whosoever repenteth, and hardeneth not his heart,
he shall have claim on mercy through mine Only Begotten Son, unto
a remission of his sins; and these shall enter into my rest.

Sonnet 661 Reflections on Alma 12:24
by Tom Matkin

The teasings and the torments of this life
The crafty cunning swindles dressed to lure
The tumult and the noisy vicious strife
The motives darkly hidden and obscure.

The greedy and the lustful and the lewd
The thieves the cheats the braggarts and the proud
The lovers of an argument, the crude
The bullies and the misers and the loud.

As much as life has so much to detest
To make us weigh and work and try and pray
We hope, one day, to be in heaven blessed
Without temptation, trouble or dismay.

And clear the reach and burden of this test
And gently, fully, enter into rest.
