Points scoring at nationals  Andrew Rizzo
 Apr 23, 2008 20:29 PDT

Another e-mail from Daniel about the new rules at nationals.

Begin forwarded message:
 Scoring points

This year, teams may be able to enter as many as 6 riders in the
road race and 4 in the criteriums (team time trial size remains
unchanged at 4, and total team size remains the same at 8 men and 8
women). In each of the road race and the crit, all riders may
score points that count toward the individual omnium, but only the
points of the top 3 riders on each team will count toward the team
omnium (see Rules 11.6.6 and 11.6.7). Please note that field
limits may reduce team sizes below the theoretical limit of 6 in
the road race and 4 in the crit.

The rules regarding team size and riders whose points count in the
team omnium have been changed to help both larger and smaller
teams. Teams that are large enough to field full squads will be
encouraged to race aggressively as a result of only 3 riders’
points counting in the team omnium. Smaller teams will not be
penalized as seriously as they have in the past if a mechanical or
accident takes one of their riders out of the race.

An additional requirement has been added for a rider to be eligible
to win the individual omnium, namely that she or he must score
points in both the road race and the criterium (see Rules 11.4 and
11.6.12). This change is intended to ensure that the omniums are
won by well-rounded riders.

Finally, the rules regarding the calculation of points have been
changed. First, the official name of each team, for purposes of
scoring team omnium points, has been specified. It is the
responsibility of each rider to ensure that they are properly
registered under this team name (see Rule 5.3).

Second, the calculation process has been clarified to reduce
ambiguities that existed in the prior version of the written rules
(please note that these ambiguities did not exist in practice and
point scoring was performed consistently at prior nationals) (see
Rules 11.4 and 11.5). In addition, the points tables have been
adjusted to reduce the number of places that may score points, to
increase the relative points awarded for doing well, and to reduce
the likelihood of ties on points in the top 10 of teams and riders
(see the Appendices to the Rules).

Lastly, the process for posting omnium scoring, and for protesting
that scoring (as opposed to the order of finish), has been
specified (see Rule 11.5.5). Please note that these specifications
include time limits in which protests must be filed in order to be
considered, and processes for correcting scoring errors.
