Year of the NCO Writing Competition  Dan Elder

Subject: Year of the NCO Writing Competition (Call for Papers)
--------
2009 has been announced as "The Year of the NCO" by the Hon. Pete Geren,
but did you know that 1989 was also the Year of the NCO nearly 20 years
ago? That singular event brought about many far-reaching and
long-lasting changes to the US Army that included the development of a
NCO Leader Development Action Plan, tying NCOES attendance to promotion,
and the development of the NCO Journal. There were many other less
noteworthy accomplishments, like the publishing of the Center of
Military History book The Story of the Noncommissioned Officer and the
FORSCOM monograph, The NCO: In their Own Words.

The Center for Advanced Studies of the United States Army
Noncommissioned Officer is now seeking papers, articles and research
material from noncommissioned officers on the original Year of the NCO,
1989, and the years directly following it when many initiatives came to
fruition. We will post and highlight some of the materials from that era
on NCOhistory.com in an effort to provide some of the hard-to-find
documents relating to the first Year of the NCO. We have designates a
special area to this topic throughout December 2009.

A winning current or former NCO will be selected by a panel from among
the submissions for the best researched and most relevant article, and a
NCO History trophy will be provided to the author. For more information
and submission instructions visit: http://yearofthenco.ncohistory.com/.

So, start researching and get to writing.

CSM (Ret) Dan Elder, Curator
Center for Advanced Studies of the US Army NCO
