Assembly Member Berg to Speak to 6th Annual Restoration Awards Celebration

-- Thursday, October 18, 2007, 6:00 - 8:30 pm, Wharfinger Building

Eureka, CA-- The Alliance for Sustainable Jobs and the Environment (ASJE)
is proud to announced the winners of their 2007 Restoration Awards in
anticipation of their Sixth Annual "Road to a Restoration Economy"
Celebration and Awards.   The Thursday evening affair features State
Assemblymember Patty Berg at the Wharfinger Building, #1 Marina Way in
Eureka. This free public event starts at 6 pm and goes until 8:30. This
event is being sponsored by the Redwood Community Action Agency, the
Mattole Restoration Council and Wendt Construction of Fortuna.

Recipients are honored in three categories. The Restoration Project of the
Year is being presented to the Yurok Tribal Watershed Department for their
McGarvey Creek Slope Stabilization Project. Department manager Walt Lara
III explained to the Yurok Today newspaper that the crew has been working
since 1997 in the nine-mile square watershed feeding into the Klamath River
at Klamath Glenn. Watershed restoration treatments including extensive
road re-contouring and labor intensive removal of old Humboldt-style creek
crossings prevented massive amounts of sediment from choking the
historically rich spawning grounds.

The Mattole Salmon Group is being recognized as the Restoration
Organization of the Year. Since 1980, this citizens group has been
"providing Rearing, Research & Instream Restoration on behalf of Native
Mattole River Salmon." The work of the Mattole Salmon Group includes
extensive habitat and species monitoring programs, large bank stabilization
and habitat enhancement projects, community outreach and environmental
education projects. Throughout their history, the group has successfully
forged

The 2007 Restoration Worker of the Year is being shared this year by Petey
Brucker of the Salmon River and Gil Gregori of the Mattole Valley. Both
honorees have toiled for decades to save salmonids in their respective
watersheds with persistence, dedication and determination. Their
pioneering efforts have provided an inspiring example for neighbors
colleagues, academics and policy makers.

An added attraction for this year is an afternoon workshop exploring Health
Care Options for Forestry and Restoration Workers, also at the Wharfinger
and running from 2-5 pm. This session will look at the total spectrum of
health care available and will feature a panel of experts covering
everything from private provider health insurance to Individual Health
Savings Accounts to structured, multi-employer plans available through unions.

Both events are free and open to the public with a rich spread of locally
donated food and beverages will be provided.
