Monday the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced
that the Conservation Innovative Grant (CIG) application that our
partnership and The Ecosystem Management Research prepared on
behalf of the western/regional Cooperative Sagebrush Initiative
(CSI) was approved in the full amount of $2,000,000. ($1,000,000
grant and $1,000,000 match). 40 projects split $14,000,000 dollars
in a nationwide funding competition. The CSI application was the
only project in the country to receive the maximum amount. The
funds will be spread out over four western states: California,
Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming. The primary basis for the grant award
is to develop a credit/metric trading system that will direct
significant new investments into restoration activities through a
market based system. So what does that mean to us! Well it means
that northeastern California and our initiative will play an
important role in a significant national and western initiative. It
means some additional funding for our restoration activities and a
huge amount of science based monitoring over the next three years.
It means this new system will begin here in northeastern California
and in the three other partner states. Just as CSSRI has leveraged
our current CIG, CSI intends to do likewise and add millions of
dollars more to restoration efforts. Again, we can expect some of
that to find its way to California. CSSRI is leveraging its recent
Sierra Nevada Conservancy Grant to allow us to team up with the
three other western states.

One of the major reasons for the NRCS award was the excellent CSSRI
track record in our Conservation Partnership Initiative planning
grant and the very successful leveraging of our current CIG. A big
thank you to all our partners and agency supporters and a special
thank you the Senators Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein who wrote
letters of support and last but not least, the Lassen and Modoc
County Boards of Supervisors who continue to support us in words,
deeds and dollars.
