TIME FOR A BREAK...
_________________________________________

I'M sure I must have mentioned/ complained about the
fact that my website http://www.newbiesandnitwits.com
will have to move to another host shortly...which is going to
involve quite a lot of work ...again...but hopefully at the end
of it all the site itself will be a lot more interactive.

This simply means that people who read 'Newbies, Nerds
& Nitwits' and visit NewbiesAndNitwits will become part of
an online communty with the ability to 'chat' to each other,
ask questions, and exchange useful information. We intend
to set up a Forum on the site - and this means I have to
discover quite a bit more about Message Boards...an entirely
new learning curve for me at any rate.

To this end I have set up a trial forum at the EZBoard website
and I hope some of you will be able to find the time to check
in there. Visit http://www.ezboard.com and enter the
NewbiesAndNitwits board ID: bnewbiesandnitwits

The way this board is set up at present anyone can log in
without registering (only our subscribers are being given this
information); there is no moderator (because we are all
reasonable people who won't fill the board with spam etc);
and anyone can start a New Topic. In fact I hope someone
will....Please try anything and everything, and have fun while
doing so, because this will point the way to what we need to
include in the 'real' forum in due course.

Try not to be nervous - I believe we can't break it - but I must
admit I find it a little terrifying. Also it seems rather slow, from my
part of the world anyway.

I asked a friend to test this new message board and she took
fright before posting a message because she thought she was
being told to contribute $7.   When you get to the EZBoards
Home Page, they may suggest you sign up with them, and make
a contribution...but you don't have to. Just go ahead and enter
our board ID (bnewbiesandnitwits)

In this issue Ron Kimball writes about these boards in
'Message Board Basics 101'.

Apart from that the only other excitement was my printer going
on strike a few days ago. It is still being serviced which means
I will have to send this straight to you without first sending it to
myself, printing it out and checking it, again, for literals.

Hopefully you won't have to put up with too many spelling
mistakes.

'MESSAGE BOARD BASICS 101'
by Ron Kimball
____________________________________

WHERE can you go to exchange and share ideas? Is there
someplace where you can ask for advice or just ask questions
concerning home based businesses?

You bet!

Message boards, AKA, discussion forums. A message board is
a place on the web that allows for reader participation and
interaction. Here, you can ask questions and become part of
what is known as a 'thread.' A 'thread' is just an ongoing set of
comments, discussions, and questions that starts off with
one member's post. A 'post' is simply someone's comment or
question that is 'posted,' or sent to the board.So, essentially a
message board is similar to a 'bulletin board in cyber space.'

There are certain guidelines of etiquette on most forums. They
are usually posted at the beginning of the site. Here are some
general guidelines:
(1) Watch your language!

~Common sense, really. Don't swear! Be courteous! Otherwise,
your message could be deleted.

(2) Advertising
~Read the rules of any board that you participate on. If they allow
ads, go for it! That's why they exist! But... If they don't allow ads,
and you post one, chances are your post will be deleted and, you
could get kicked off the board.

Note:
~Most forums will allow you to include your site URL and/or a
signature file. You might even get to include a text 'link caption'
to spark curiosity.

(3) Recruiting
~Most boards don't allow recruiting. It's pretty much akin to
advertising.

There are 2 types of discussion boards--moderated
and unmoderated.

Moderated boards usually have someone who reads each new
message before it's posted. Then a decision is made about it's
contents, if it meets board regulations, or if it's just an ad. If it's
decided that it is an ad, then chances are it will get deleted.

Some moderators will even send some type of 'tsk,tsk' message
to the poster. You might get an even nastier email from
members of the board. Deleting an ad simply saves the other
board participants from having to waste time looking at it.

Conversely, unmoderated boards exist for advertising purposes.
If you don't mind all of the posting, this could be the place for you.
What you'll find could be a place for you to test ads. But
understand that you will probably not get too much attention. It
seems that marketers who use these forums won't necessarily
be reading your ad. They are there to post their ads.

Here are just a scant few message or discussion
boards that you can visit:

http://www.mlmwoman.com/wwwboard/
http://www.talkbiz.com/cgi-bin/mlm.cgi
http://www.freemoneyservices.com/forums/UltraBoard.cgi
http://www.mlmforums.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro
http://www.mlm.com click on 'Forum'
http://start-smartz.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi 'Kiki's Cafe'

As a reminder: You may want to do some business with some of
the people on these boards someday so follow those guidelines.
Don't forget that THEY might want to do business with you, too.

Usually, the people who post on these forums are friendly and
willing to lend a hand, in regard to sharing advice or information.

For example, if you are an ezine publisher and would like to find
out how to sell or buy an ezine, go to your favorite board, post the
question, and check in a couple times a day for a few days and
see if there are any responses.

Don't be surprised when you log into your email box one day and
find a response or two to a post you might have made the night
before. It happens!

Message boards, discussion forums, whatever you choose to
call them can be a great source of exposure for you and your
business.

They can also be valuable in building camaraderie and
relationships. Not to mention, they are an excellent resource for
obtaining up to date information, tips and insight.

Inject your own personality into your posts. Above all, go with the
flow and just have a good time.

REMOVING THOSE PESKY >>>>'s
by Maria Marsala
_____________________________________

DO you receive notes that appear to contain a zillion >>>>?
These pesky signs are called 'angle brackets' and the 'greater
than sign.'

Each angle bracket that appears at the front of a line
of text denotes the number of times that message has been
fowarded prior to it arriving in your mailbox. Below are three
ways you can remove these pesky signs from an email:

Copy the email into a word document program (such as Word).
Then hit edit, then replace. In the find area of the format, put
a > and leave the replace area blank. Then hit replace all.
Works like a charm.

Go to http://www.jbmckee.com/formatit/ Copy the email into this
form. In the area designated as 'filter' put the > and voilá...
all the brackets are gone. Try it for yourself.

Or use this program suggested by it's designer, Theresa King,
http://www.hostswan.com/strip.html

Any way you do it... please remove those pesky >>>>
before you forward mail. Your friends and clients will thank you!

RECOMMENDED DOWNLOAD - NoteTab Light
________________________________________

THIS is the Freeware version of NoteTab Std and
NoteTab Pro and this text editor can be downloaded from
http://www.notetab.com/ When the program is installed
on your PC you will be given the option to make NoteTab
the default, in place of NotePad which comes with
Windows, and I assure you I have never regretted doing
this.

Before I came across NoteTab I tried to do everything in
Word. By contrast the only time I open Word now is when I
need to type a formal letter.

This useful software is packed with functions, which range from
stripping HTML from a document, to changing text from Upper to
Lower Case or vice versa. It is a handy HTML editor, comes
complete with a set of conversion tables, and invites you to
create Clip Libraries.

This covers only a fraction of what NoteTab can do. When you
peruse the Help Topics you will begin to get the full picture - and
after two years of extensive use I still continue to make pleasant
discoveries about NoteTab.

SOME QUESTIONS ANSWERED
_______________________________________

Q: When I use remove programs from my computer,
should I answer 'Yes' or 'No' to the question, 'Do you
want to remove a shared file?'

A: Shared files have the file extension ".DLL" on them.
That means they're a Dynamic Linked Library file. All this
means is the file in question can be used by different
programs. A word processor and another program may
share a DLL file. So removing that file may cause another
program to malfunction.

You may have seen a message stating that a certain file
cannot be found. That file is needed in order to open
the program you're trying to use. Why is it missing? Could
be that you removed it when you uninstalled another program.

The bottom line: If you aren't familiar with a filename,
and you're asked if you want to delete it, don't. Just
answer 'No' to the question. The genie inside your PC will
leave the file alone.

~~~~~~~~~~
Q: Is it true that a lot of files in my Temp directory can slow
down the startup process of Windows? And why are there
files in that directory, anyway?
A: Yes, it's true. But there would have to be a lot of stuff
there that was never deleted. Normally, programs use the
Temp directory to store bits and pieces of themselves while
work is going on. When you close the program, or an install
of new software is complete, files that were stored in the
Temp directory should be deleted automatically.
But this doesn't always happen.
Using Windows Explorer, open the Temp folder in the
C:\Windows folder. Look at the dates on any files in that
folder. If the dates are older than the last time you started
your computer, you can safely delete them. Don't
delete any file in the Temp folder that has today's date
on it, unless you recognize the file.
~~~~~~~~~

Q: I hear the term 'root directory' used. What does that
mean?

A: The root directory is the lowest point of your folder
structure. It's actually your C:/ drive, without any folders.
It's known as the root, because if you liken the folder
structure to a tree (called a folder tree or directory tree)
then you'll kind of get the picture. The root is the base
of the rest of the tree. Except this tree hangs upside
down, which is confusing.

~~~~~~~~~
Q: Is there a safe way to remove files from my computer,
even if I don't recognize them?
A: Ah, maybe. If you're quite sure, but not 100% solid on
the results of erasing a file, just move it to the recycle
bin. The next time you restart your computer, if everything
goes well, and all your favorite programs work, then you
can safely empty the bin and eliminate the file. If
something is whacked, however, restore the files in the
bin.
*   ----------------------HOT TIP--------------------- *
USE THE SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY
Programs that load upon startup require system resources (a
special memory location). Multiple startups suck up precious
resources, and can cause Windows to creep. To check what's
happening, type 'msconfig' into the Run dialog box from the
Start Menu. (Don't type the quotes.) Then click the Startup
tab. Uncheck everything but 'Explorer' and 'Systray'. There's
a list of stuff and what it does at this web site:
REMOVING THOSE PESKY >>>>'s<br>
by Maria Marsala<br>
_____________________________________<br><br>
</b>DO you receive notes that appear to contain a zillion >>>>?<br>
These pesky signs are called 'angle brackets' and the 'greater<br>
than sign.'<br><br>
Each angle bracket that appears at the front of a line<br>
of text denotes the number of times that message has been<br>
fowarded prior to it arriving in your mailbox. Below are three<br>
ways you can remove these pesky signs from an email:<br><br>
Copy the email into a word document program (such as Word).<br>
Then hit edit, then replace. In the find area of the format, put<br>
a > and leave the replace area blank. Then hit replace all.<br>
Works like a charm.<br><br>
Go to <a href="http://www.jbmckee.com/formatit/" eudora="autourl">http://www.jbmckee.com/formatit/</a> Copy the email into this<br>
form. In the area designated as 'filter' put the > and voilá...<br>
all the brackets are gone. Try it for yourself.<br><br>
Or use this program suggested by it's designer, Theresa King,<br>
<a href="http://www.hostswan.com/strip.html" eudora="autourl">http://www.hostswan.com/strip.html</a><br><br>
Any way you do it... please remove those pesky >>>><br>
before you forward mail. Your friends and clients will thank you!<br><br>
RECOMMENDED DOWNLOAD - NoteTab Light<br>
________________________________________<br><br>
</b>THIS is the Freeware version of NoteTab Std and<br>
NoteTab Pro and this text editor can be downloaded from<br>
<a href="http://www.notetab.com/" eudora="autourl">http://www.notetab.com/</a>  When the program is installed<br>
on your PC you will be given the option to make NoteTab<br>
the default, in place of NotePad which comes with<br>
Windows, and I assure you I have never regretted doing<br>
this.<br><br>
Before I came across NoteTab I tried to do everything in<br>
Word.  By contrast the only time I open Word now is when I<br>
need to type a formal letter.<br><br>
This useful software is packed with functions, which range from<br>
stripping HTML from a document, to changing text from Upper to<br>
Lower Case or vice versa.  It  is a handy HTML editor,  comes<br>
complete with a set of conversion tables, and invites you to<br>
create Clip Libraries.<br><br>
This covers only a fraction of what NoteTab can do. When you<br>
peruse the Help Topics you will begin to get the full picture - and<br>
after two years of extensive use I still continue to make pleasant<br>
discoveries about NoteTab.<br><br>
<b>SOME QUESTIONS ANSWERED<br>
_______________________________________<br><br>
</b>Q: When I use remove programs from my computer,<br>
should I answer 'Yes' or 'No' to the question, 'Do you<br>
want to remove a shared file?'<br><br>
A: Shared files have the file extension ".DLL" on them.<br>
That means they're a Dynamic Linked Library file. All this<br>
means is the file in question can be used by different<br>
programs. A word processor and another program may<br>
share a DLL file. So removing that file may cause another<br>
program to malfunction.<br><br>
You may have seen a message stating that a certain file<br>
cannot be found. That file is needed in order to open<br>
the program you're trying to use. Why is it missing? Could<br>
be that you removed it when you uninstalled another program.<br><br>
The bottom line: If you aren't familiar with a filename,<br>
and you're asked if you want to delete it, don't. Just<br>
answer 'No' to the question. The genie inside your PC will<br>
leave the file alone.<br><br>
~~~~~~~~~~<br><br>
Q: Is it true that a lot of files in my Temp directory can slow<br>
down the startup process of Windows? And why are there<br>
files in that directory, anyway?<br><br>
A: Yes, it's true. But there would have to be a lot of stuff<br>
there that was never deleted. Normally, programs use the<br>
Temp directory to store bits and pieces of themselves while<br>
work is going on. When you close the program, or an install<br>
of new software is complete, files that were stored in the<br>
Temp directory should be deleted automatically.<br><br>
But this doesn't always happen.<br><br>
Using Windows Explorer, open the Temp folder in the<br>
C:\Windows folder. Look at the dates on any files in that<br>
folder. If the dates are older than the last time you started<br>
your computer, you can safely delete them. Don't<br>
delete any file in the Temp folder that has today's date<br>
on it, unless you recognize the file.<br><br>
~~~~~~~~~<br><br>
Q: I hear the term 'root directory' used. What does that<br>
mean?<br><br>
A: The root directory is the lowest point of your folder<br>
structure. It's actually your C:/ drive, without any folders.<br>
It's known as the root, because if you liken the folder<br>
structure to a tree (called a folder tree or directory tree)<br>
then you'll kind of get the picture. The root is the base<br>
of the rest of the tree. Except this tree hangs upside<br>
down, which is confusing.<br><br>
~~~~~~~~~<br><br>
Q: Is there a safe way to remove files from my computer,<br>
even if I don't recognize them?<br><br>
A: Ah, maybe. If you're quite sure, but not 100% solid on<br>
the results of erasing a file, just move it to the recycle<br>
bin. The next time you restart your computer, if everything<br>
goes well, and all your favorite programs work, then you<br>
can safely empty the bin and eliminate the file. If<br>
something is whacked, however, restore the files in the<br>
bin.<br><br>

<b>*   ----------------------HOT TIP---------------------  *<br><br>
</b>USE THE SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY<br>
Programs that load upon startup require system resources (a<br>
special memory location). Multiple startups suck up precious<br>
resources, and can cause Windows to creep. To check what's<br>
happening, type 'msconfig' into the Run dialog box from the<br>
Start Menu. (Don't type the quotes.) Then click the Startup<br>
tab. Uncheck everything but 'Explorer' and 'Systray'. There's<br>
a list of stuff and what it does at this web site:<br>
