I did this ride last year and it was a blast. We started in the middle of
the pack; I think our average rolling pace was around 12 mph, but it took
us about 6 hours to complete with all the stops we made. This is
definitely not your average club ride; more of a slow, fun tourist ride.
The crowd is what makes it; everything you can imagine from clubs to
entire families to multi-rider machines are there. It's a great way to
see the city; cyclists own the roads for the day. I am planning to drive
down Friday night 4/29 and to stay through until Monday. Last year we
drove home Sunday night after the ride, but it made for a very long day.
We were up at 6 & left the hotel at 7. We had a quick breakfast (coffee &
bagels) on the way to the start. The start happens in waves of riders; if
you go to the BNY website they give a count of 30,000 participants last
year. Because of the crowds we actually didn't get moving until around
9:30 AM, and when we did it was as part of a rolling mass. Think of the
Boston Marathon start but on wheels. At one point, as were riding down
Avenue of the Americas, I stood up on my pedals and as far down the road
as you could see in either direction were a solid mass of cyclists. We
hit a couple of the stops, got lots of free food, and at the end had to
wait about 60 minutes for our ferry ride back. We ended the ride by
cycling through Manhattan in Sunday afternoon traffic to get back to where
our car was parked in Times Square a couple of miles away. By the time we
started the drive home it was already after 5, and after stopping for
dinner it was past 11 when we arrived home. I am thinking this year it
would be a lot more fun to spend the extra night and drive back Monday.
