Being a Civil Engineer, road design is part of what I do. Many
developers complain that it is a lot more expensive to add bike lanes,
etc., especially since it takes about 12 more feet of right of way
(meaning 12 less feet along the roadway that they can develop).
Personally, I don't feel it adds that much cost, relative to the total
cost of development, and I think it adds value in terms of quality of
life. It just depends on where you put your priorities. Here in the
states, the priority seems to be on making a profit and sitting on your
fat ass.
