Ah, now THERE is the abuse. If you had turned over the Mills once by hand before flicking it mightily you'd have known it was slightly flooded .... and it was obviously flooded well enough to transfer the energy of the Grizzly Bear flick straight to the firewall which is, at least, better than bending the rod.
Incidentally a diesel really doesn't have to be flicked that hard at all to be started, just a tad more smartly than a glow.though I do not think I handle one any differently to the other. Except that I sometimes use a starter on a glow (if I'm sure the crankpin doesn't moive back - on a PB - to touch the backplate .... but NEVER on a diesel
