Subject:
Hi Fellow Cyclists,
This is not a solicitation , so please don't delete this. My name is Tony
Marchionne and I am a member of the Outdoor Club of South Jersey, a
multi-discipline
club. The club has about 1700 memebers, about 25% of which are cyclists.
Currently, the bicycling side of the club is struggling with communicating
our ride schedule to our members. I wanted to find out how some other clubs
are doing it, so I got your club's address from
cyclery.com (of which we are also a member).
What we do now is to have our ride coordinators gather proposed rides from
ride leaders, coalate and sort them, and publish them in a quarterly
newsletter
(which is professionally printed) that is mailed to each club member. Our
problem is that rides for the next quarter (Jan - Mar '01), for example,
had to be submitted to the coordinators by mid-October to make it in next
quarter's
book. That means people have to commit to lead rides in March 2001 almost
six months in advance. Many people won't make that commitment, and we are
losing leaders.
What a group of us want to do is to take advantage of other media (phone,
Internet, desktop publishing, etc.) to make the list more timely. One of
the issues we are fighting is heavy resistance to change. The Board and
officers of the club have been entrenched for years and don't necessarily
want to change. We thought of switching to monthly newsletters, but the
powers that be are afraid of the increase in postage (which would drive
up our minimal $8 per year membership fes) and the effort needed to publish
more frequently.
What does your club do? We are trying to gather info on how other clubs
communicate with their members. I am looking for things like communication
methods, frequency, costs (if you have them), software or services used
to assemble your newsletter, relative number of club members, number of
rides per weekend or week, etc. We hope to take the best practices and
present
them to the Club's leaders in order to combat their resisitance. Any info
you would be willing to share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in
advance
and Happy Cyling.
Tony Marchionne
P.S. To John Everett of the Naperville Bike Club - How's it going? As you
can see we're trying to make some much needed changes to the club. I'll
keep you posted!
