re: Heart of AZ century in 5 days, some preparation required  Russell L. Carter
 Nov 02, 2009 16:56 PST

Loop #4 is Wed., departing 8AM from Denny's on Gail Gardner.
Pace will be about 3:45 wall clock door-to-door from my house
in Prescott Heights.

Anybody who wants to join is welcome.

The weather is tres awesome. This is November, in
the mountain West. 60-70Fs for most of a 55 mile ride
that begins and ends over 5000'.

Today I was joined by Bill not far from the Junction on the
climb back to Prescott. It was very nice. So that is another
option. Maybe start 1 hr later and descend to the depths of
Wilhoit, and beyond. Then climb back.

Tomorrow I intend to be going for endurance building on
today so it'll be close to a 'no-drop' pace.

Today's loop may have been the loveliest one I've ever ridden.
N winds on the backside meant sailing along effortlessly,
30+ avg. mph to SV from the top of Iron Springs, 25+ to
Kirkland Junction. Little to no traffic till after Wilhoit,
and not even one motorized asshole (maybe a first).

No snow, but you can't have it all.

There were three young chaps at the store in Wilhoit who are
touring self-supported from NY to LA.   Talking to the lady
minding the store, it turns out that there are over the course
of a year quite a number of tourists riding through Prescott
(then stopping at the Wilhoit store). Does anybody know if
there is some sort of organization that matches up cycle-tourists
with people in towns who can put them up for the night? I would
have been happy to give them floor space and a big meal.

Brrrrrr... that was a bit brisk. But the occasional snow
showers climbing out of Wilhoit gave the outing a festive
air. Ed and I had a good time today knocking down loop
number 1. 3 to go. I was thinking of doing #2 on either Fri or
Sat, depending on interest, if any. Then again on Mon and Wed.
Same situation as described below. That is, some scheduling
flexibility available.

So I see that the Heart of AZ century

http://www.bullshifters.org/heartofaz.htm

includes a modest 6000' of climbing in 104 miles.

That's enough to incentivise even fat and lazy me to apply a bit of
extra prep for the next 13 days. So I'm going to ride the SV loop 4
times. Thru a quirk of fate I'm free during the next several weeks,
so I'm thinking of leaving via Iron Springs sometime around 8-10AM.
Leaning toward next Wed, Sat, then Mon, then Thu.

If anybody is interested in joining me please send me an email and if
I can move things around a bit to accomodate your schedule I'd be
happy to. If there seems to be enough interest for a particular ride
I'll firm up the starting time and date a bit earlier than otherwise
and post it back here as a general ride.

Pace will be not be blazing for the first three outings but I intend
to kill myself on the last one. (Maybe it should be on next Wed a
week from now.)

Needless to say I suppose, but these rides could possibly provide a
nice prep for TdT in another two weeks, as well.

Ta,
Russell
