well it's been almost a year since anyone has posted on this list. how
is everyone doing? do you even remember this list? :)
6 months ago i picked up a canon 10D from a local photographer who was
upgrading to the 20D. it's a very good camera, but it made me realize
the evils of digital photography.
i feel digital still has a way to go to match film for one reason that
somehow gets ignored by the majority of amateurs: color density. i was
incredibly disappointed with the 10D's lack of density when compared to
the scans i'm still getting out of my 6 year old ls-2000 film scanner.
but it's good enough that it takes very nice photographs anyway so...
digital makes for a lazy photographer. it's so easy to reframe a shot,
or get just the right expression, the right exposure. you can just fire
away and the immediate feedback tells you whether you screwed the pooch
on the shot or whether you got it.
as a result i've become lazy about my compositions, i've become
complacent about attention to detail, apathetic about the technical
aspects of exposure. basically... I BLAME THE 10D FOR RUINING ME.
heh... not a bad excuse eh? well, i think there's actually quite a lot
of truth here (at least for me). somehow i can't make the leap to
treating my digital camera the same i treat my film camera. it doesn't
get the same respect (even after mounting the larger grip) as my EOS-3.
so i've decided to start anew and to try to treat the digital medium as
a new form of photography instead of forcing myself to work the way i do
(did?) with film.
i've dumped (that's really all i can call it) a bunch of images taken
with my 10D here: http://gallery.popmonkey.com
my first real project is to take advantage of the digital capabilities
and to shoot one photo a day for the next 365 days. i mean, if i can
get the instant feedback, this should be reasonable to do, no?
so here we go: http://popmonkey.blogspot.com
anyone else want to start a photo-a-day project? post a link to it
here. it can be like a support group :|
keep me honest by checking up on my progress once in a while, i will do
the same for anyone who posts their photo-a-day here.
(btw, i'm still shooting film, but only for paid projects)
