DEAD PYTHON DEBUTS IN EDINBURGH
Recently unearthed scripts by Monty Python star Graham Chapman get a
World Premiere at this year’s Edinburgh Festival, in Planet Comedy’s
caberet show Sketch Club at the Gilded Balloon Theatre.
Python fans will instantly recognise Chapman’s unique brand of humour in
“Busy Messiah”- a sketch reminiscent of his hit movie The Life Of
Brian, and in “Who’s A Pretty Boy Then”, a routine which features a gay
budgie.
“These sketches have never been seen outside the confines of Graham's
desk drawer,” says Jim Yoakum, literary executor of the US-based Graham
Chapman Archives. “It’s exciting to think this material will finally
reach a live audience so many years after his death.” Graham Chapman
died from cancer in 1989. Gin and Tonic, a new film based on his life,
is currently in pre-production at LA-based Hippofilms
Sketch Club is the brainchild of Planet Comedy's Andrew Barclay & Brian
West, creators of Channel 4’s cult comedy series Pets. “We’re delighted
to have an opportunity to exclusively present new sketches by one of the
true comedy greats” says Barclay. “As a huge Python fan myself, it’s a
real thrill for me”.
Sketch Club is unlike any other comedy gig on the Fringe. The show
features glitz, glamour, showgirls, singers and a host of sparkling new
sketches that are guaranteed to make a splash in Edinburgh.
Sketch Club runs in Edinburgh 2-25 August 2002, 9.45pm, Gilded Balloon
Theatre. Box Office: 0131 226 2151. Previews: Downstairs At The Kings
Head, Crouch End, N8., 9.00 pm, Weds 17 and Weds 24 July 2002.
