POLITICAL DIARY
The Inside Source for News
Joyce Lynn, Editor
POLITICAL DIARY is founded on the power of dreams to inform, guide, and
heal. Each of us has an Inside Source, revealing political truths and
social strategies to create peace and well-being for all.
IN THIS ISSUE:
FROM THE EDITOR: 'Environmental" Change -- Fear or Fact?
VIRTUE: Dream Classic Imparts Wisdom for the Common Wealth
OP-ED: Take Nancy Pelosi Off the Table (as House Speaker)
EDITOR'S NOTE: This issue of Political Diary is derived from the
Post-Election Edition of Plum Dreams Journal http://www.plumdreams,
which reports on the transformational resource of dreams for
truth-telling, guidance and healing. This online publication is a place
to learn from the dream experiences of others and to share our own
dreams.
FROM THE EDITOR:
'Environmental" Change -- Fear or Fact?
"I had a political dream last night and I wanted to give you a call," a
sleepy-sounding Allison said on a voice message at 8 am on Halloween,
October 31. A long pause and then .... she wished me well and hung up.
I called and emailed my friend several times to learn about her dream.
Then around 3 o'clock on November 4, she left this message: "Happy
election day. I did not get back to you with my dream, because it was
not a very good one.... Barack had won at/in (garbled) the polls, and
then there was a kind of environment with alot of riots. There was a
movie going back on the human rights movement."
She then judged her dream instead of interpreting it: "It was not a
good dream. That was why I was not looking forward to sharing it with
you. I was not very proud of this dream. I do not know what it means."
She added, "There is some hope. NPR reported yesterday morning on
Michael Connell ... his name is out there now." Connell's computer
consulting firm was involved with Bush's 2004 election campaign as well
as McCain's 2008 Republican campaign. Connell reportedly denied under
oath he knew of any GOP effort to steal the 2004 election for Bush by
rigging Ohio vote totals (Center for Legitimate Government, November 3,
2008).
Allison's call came as exuberance was high anticipating a huge Obama
win. It annoyed me she waited five days to share the dream --
diminishing the chance of confronting its content (denial does not
change the outcome) and of exploring what it could mean.
Were the Republicans posed once again to steal the election? (How many
of us woke up on November 5 with a bit of post-traumatic stress,
recalling the two previous presidential election results flipping in the
middle of the night?) Did massive voter turnout and raised awareness of
election theft prevent hijacking the presidential election? Did the
outing of the Republican computer consultant Allison mentioned in her
message put a kink in any Rovian plot to steal this election, too?
(However, 6 million voters purged from the rolls, missing ballots, and
malfunctioning voting machines may have compromised some House and
Senate races and given Rove et al preelection hope they could hijack the
McCain-Obama race, too.)
Did a transformational change in American politics transform potential
riots of disenfranchised voters into dancing in the streets all over the
world?
Is there still prophecy in Allison's dream? Are the protests against the
passage of Prop 8 in California (changing the state Constitution to deny
marriage to same sex partners) an indication? Shamed and neutered
Republicans, neo-cons, right-wing talk show hosts, Klan, and
pseudo-religious end-timers are already ginning up the hate they stoked
during the Presidential campaign. Allison is an environmental guru --
she used the word "environment" in describing her dream. What
environment might change?
"Commentary on the Dream of Scipio" a book by Macrobius detailed in the
article, "Virtue," below, says of dreams such as Allison's:
"...all portents and dreams conform to the rule that their
announcements, threats, or warnings of imminent adversity are always
ambiguous. Consequently we surmount some difficulties by caution and
others we escape by entreaty and propitiation, still others are
inevitable, being turned away by no skill or powers ...."
As I always teach and "preach," our dreams appear in service to us.
Nightmares reoccur until we hear and heed their message. The Universe
wants us to remember, know, understand, and act (in a positive way) on
the significance of our dreams.
Dream On,

VIRTUE: Dream Classic Imparts Wisdom for the Common Wealth
Ancient philosophers Plato and Cicero explored the ideal commonwealth in
their writings. Their treatises sought to instill the desire to lead an
upright, law abiding life. Departed souls, sometimes in dreams, revealed
the way.
Plato's Myth of Er in his "Republic"and Cicero's Dream of Scipio from
"De re publica" are vaunted vehicles.
In "Commentary on the Dream of Scipio," (translated with an introduction
and notes by William Harris Stahl, Columbia University Press), Macrobius
interweaves philosophical discourse with narratives of visions and
dreams. His discussion of types of dreams and their prophetic
significance (derived from Artemidorus' "Onirocriticon," was one of the
leading dream books of -- and from -- the Middle Ages.
The words of Scipio's grandfather to Scipio Aemilianus, a philosopher
and man of public affairs, in the younger's dream ring loud in the wake
of Barack Obama's presidential win. The elder suggests what is incumbent
upon the new leader and upon us, the citizenry:
"That you may be more zealous in safeguarding the commonwealth, Scipio,
be persuaded of this: all those who have saved, aided, or enlarged the
commonwealth have a definite place marked off in the heavens where they
may enjoy a blessed existence forever. Nothing that occurs on earth,
indeed, is more gratifying to that supreme God who rules the whole
universe than the establishment of associations and federations of men
bound together by principles of justice, which are called commonwealths.
The governors and protectors of these proceed from here and return
hither after death."
In his commentary on Scipio's dream, Macrobius expounded: "Virtues
alone make one blessed and only through them is one able to attain the
name."
Obedience to the virtues -- prudence, temperance, courage, and justice
-- benefits the commonwealth and the man....
Macrobius expands on these virtues in the political arena: "By these
virtues . . . upright men ... direct the welfare of the citizens, and by
these they safeguard their allies with anxious forethought and bind them
with the liberality of their justice; by these 'They have won
remembrance among men.'
"... By these virtues the good man is first made lord of himself and
then ruler of the state, and is just and prudent in his regard for human
welfare, never forgetting his obligations."

Democrats, it's time to clean the House. Start at the top.
When the 111th Congress convenes in January, it is time for a change ---
a change of the Speaker of the House. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca) in her
two years as Speaker has enabled a pro-Bush, pro-corporate agenda almost
as facilely and frequently as Republican presidential nominee John
McCain.
In November, 2006, voters put Democrats in the majority in Congress to
end the Iraq occupation and hold Bush responsible for the war. But
before she became Speaker, Pelosi took impeachment off the table, giving
Bush a blank check to wage the Iraq war for two more years.
Showing disdain for those opposed to the war, Pelosi snubbed peace
demonstrators outside her San Francisco home, morphing into Bush, who
refused to meet Cindy Sheehan and peace protesters outside his Crawford,
Texas compound.
Under Pelosi's leadership, Congress gave Bush a 1⁄2 trillion
dollars for the Iraq war Pelosi said she wanted to stop. More than 1,200
U.S. soldiers and thousands of Iraqi men, women, and children have died
since Pelosi became Speaker.
Pelosi has refused to sanction hearings to collect evidence about
impeachable offenses, and she quashed other House members' impeachment
efforts. By last June, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) had compiled at
least 35 articles of impeachment for G.W. Bush. The first 16 articles
relate to the Iraq war: for secret propaganda; deception about 9/11;
weapons of mass destruction, and illegal spending in an unauthorized and
undeclared war.
Pelosi also enabled legislation legalizing warrantless wiretapping and
granting immunity not only for telecommunications company executives,
but also for Bush, Dick Cheney, and other administration officials. The
law obliterated our Fourth Amendment protections against illegal search
and seizure.
Pelosi looked the other way as Bush politicized the Justice Department,
using federal Attorneys General to corrupt the voting process and wage
political vendettas against Democrats. Former Alabama Governor Donald
Siegelman spent time in Federal prison after Karl Rove's political
associates trumped up charges against him . Pelosi has let White House
Chief of Staff Joshua Bolton, and former Counsel Harriet Miers and
Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove defy Congressional subpoenas.
In September, Pelosi joined with Bush to plunder even more of the
Treasury for their corporate cronies under the guise of a $700 billion
Wall Street bailout. Pelosi with other Congressional Democrats stood at
the microphones, salivating at the prospect of helping Bush loot the
U.S. Treasury. The scene was sickeningly reminiscent of Congressional
Democratic leaders Tom Daschle and Richard Gephardt, wearing
presidential ambitions on their sleeves, rush to the White House six
years earlier to embrace Bush and his illegal and immoral preemptive
attack on the people of Iraq.
Instead of educating and leading and representing, Pelosi and her
Democratic cohorts quiver at the thought they might be blamed for a
terrorist attack or financial collapse if they deny Bush what he wants.
Are Pelosi's repeated capitulations to Bush due to complicity -- knowing
inside information about 9/11, torture, and wiretapping? If she were
compromised, Pelosi could have refused the speaker's position. If she
were afraid of political retaliation like that against Siegelman, she
could have stepped down.
If Bush et al had threatened another 9/11 or martial law if the
Democrats voted against his corporate agenda, the smart, powerful,
proactive politician would hold a press conference surrounded with other
vulnerable officials and tell the American public the truth.
But instead, Pelosi appears a willing tool. She has used her position to
enrich herself and her family. The first female Speaker of the House is
part of a cabal, one which, unfortunately, includes other Congressional
women dressed in Democratic cloth coats by day and power suits by night.
Through their positions in Congress, Pelosi along with, most notably,
Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA) and Senators Diane Feinstein (D-CA) and Hillary
Rodham Clinton (D-NY) are enriching their family financial coffers and
building family dynasties. (Feinstein, Harman, and Clinton voted for
the Iraq resolution.)
Sheehan, who challenged Pelosi in November for California's 8th
Congressional District, the San Francisco seat Pelosi has held since
1987, issued a campaign-like manifesto in May 2008: "Blood is being
poured into the bank accounts of the ruling elite while it is being
drained out of our soldiers, families, and communities..."
Pelosi has confused politics with Constitutional responsibility.
Protesters shouted, "Know your power, Nancy. Impeach, impeach,"
interrupting a San Francisco event in August for her book ironically
titled "Know Your Power." Pelosi cavalierly told them to take their
passion and ... vote for Barack Obama.
Pelosi has amassed a power base in Congress during her 20 years as a
House member and the last two years as Speaker. According to the San
Francisco Bay Guardian, Pelosi has doled out millions from her political
action committee to help elect other Congressional Democrats -- ensuring
their votes on the war, economy, and Constitutional matters and their
indebtedness to her reelection as Speaker.
A corporate media blackout of Sheehan's challenge and the acquiesce of
progressive talk show hosts, bloggers, and magazine editors and
reporters further entrench Pelosi's power.
Pelosi sided with President-elect Obama late in the Democratic primaries
against Sen. Clinton and has built bridges to his transition team.
However, other members of Congress could serve with distinction as
Speaker, while forging a legislative agenda to benefit America and the
people of America. It is time for a politically astute leader, who
possesses courage, morals, and ethics, perhaps someone like Rep. John
Lewis (D-GA). (Pelosi has called the civil rights leader "the conscience
of the U.S. Congress.")
Under Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), public
approval of Congress sunk in July to 9%, an all time low. Rather than be
fooled again, it is time for the Democrats to elect a Speaker who knows
how to use power.
