PRACTICE TIPS #50: The Highlight of Your Week . . .
----------------------------------------------------
In a previous issue of Practice Tips, I mentioned that I like to go through
my musical scores and highlight different musical markings with colored
pencils.
What do you know, but someone has actually done a scientific study of this
technique. Suzanne Banister wrote an article called "The effects of
highlighting on the musicality of middle school band students' performance"
(Contributions to Music Education no. 21, 1994, p. 64-72).
Banister wrote, "Highlighting the musical symbols in the music had a
significant effect on student performances, and a majority of the students
indicated a preference for highlighted music."
So highlight *your* symbols and maybe your performance will be
significantly better and more musical! And maybe you will find that you
like it, too . . .
Happy Holidays and Happy Practicing!

PRACTICE TIPS is by pianist, teacher, composer, and internet nerd
Brent Hugh. Brent knows about practicing mostly because he *does*
it, and in fact is toddling off to do some of it just about now . . .
Please remember that this tip is but a small black spot on the
elephant's left front toenail--it's not even close to the whole
elephant that is "how everyone in the whole world should practice
the piano".
