PRACTICE TIPS #57: How Do You Know When It's Right?
---------------------------------------------------
How do you know when a passage is good? How do you know that it is,=20
technically and musically, the best it can be?
Asking yourself the following three questions is a good start. If answer=20
"yes" to all three questions, you can have confidence you are on the right=
=20
track. If there is a problem with one or more of the three elements, you=20
need to do some problem solving.
1. Does it SOUND right? Does it have the right notes, the right rhythms,=20
the right dynamics and phrasing, the right tempo, the right articulation,=20
the right voicing?
2. Does it FEEL right? Are you as relaxed as possible to play this passage,=
=20
or do you feel excess tension in your hands, arms, shoulders, neck, or=20
anywhere else? In general, do your movements feel smooth and flowing or=20
sharp and jerky? Do you even have an awareness of how your hands, arm, and=
=20
body feel, or have you blocked these feelings out altogether?
3. Does it LOOK right? Can you see any evidence of excess tension? Does the=
=20
choreography of your movements=97hands, fingers, arms, head, and entire=20
body=97seem to match the requirements of the passage?
Happy Practicing!

PRACTICE TIPS is by pianist, teacher, composer, and internet nerd
Brent Hugh. Brent knows about practicing mostly because he *does*
it, and in fact is toddling off to do some of it just about now . . .
Please remember that this tip is but a small brown hair near the
elephant's left rear knee--it's not even close to the whole
elephant that is "how everyone in the whole world should practice
the piano".
