PRACTICE TIPS #62: Does Metronome Help?
=======================================

My opinion is that the metronome should be used often in
practice--certainly not always, or even most of the time, but often. For
instance, use metronome some every day and some on most every piece you learn.

Using metronome forces you to be more precise in your counting and playing.
It helps develop your rhythmic sense.

Metronome practice can and should be combined with other practice methods,
such as practicing in sections, stops, staccato, loud, soft, and so on.

Does metronome really help? A recent study of teen-aged percussionists
found that those who practiced with metronome made half the rhythm mistakes
and half the tempo mistakes of those who practiced without metronome.

Will metronome solve ALL your rhythmic problems? Of course not. But, used
in the right way, it can help.

Happy Practicing!

--Brent

PRACTICE TIPS is by pianist, teacher, composer, and internet nerd
Brent Hugh. Brent knows about practicing mostly because he *does*
it, and in fact is toddling off to do some of it just about now . . .

Please remember that this tip is but a small itchy spot near the
elephant's right earlobe--it's not even close to the whole
elephant that is "how everyone in the whole world should practice
the piano".
